I am currently a freshmen at Emory. I didn't really research the schools that I was applying to during my senior year. So now I feel like that Emory doesn't fit me for several reasons. Mainly it's because the career oriented atmosphere;everyone here is a pre med, pre business, or a pre law and everyone only cares about their gpa. Also, the student body here is uninteresting. There are a lot of snobby and stuck up people. Everyone goes to the frat parties on the weekends to get drunk, and there isn't much to do. So, now i am looking into tranferring to another school.
I am looking for a school that has:
1) an intellectual atmosphere
2) near a very urban area
3) Diverse student body in terms of race, socieconomic class, and interests
4) a descent biology program

I am already considering Yale and Columbia but i am also looking for schools that are easier to get into. Thanks in advance.

barc202 - Some possibilities - the University of Chicago (my alma mater), Reed College, Brandeis University, University of Rochester, Reed College, Oberlin College (though it's more rural), Swarthmore College in suburban Philly, New College in Florida (very small but intellectual), St. John's Colleges in Annapolis, Maryland and Sante Fe, New Mexico, and Earlham College (more rural but lots of students learning for the sake of learning). I am not up on the ethnic diversity of each of these colleges but the intellectual (and not pre-professional) criteria they all meet.

The previous poster's suggestions are very good ones. Keep in mind that you will need a hgh gpa to transfer and that you actually may need a high gpa throughout college even if you are not planning to attend law or med school or get an MBA. EVen if you decide you want to be history professor you'll need good grades. So although you may want to be with people who don't act as though they care about their gpas, it isn't really something yu can ignore. And keep in mind that in a bio program many people will be pre-med, or heading for graduate school, and gpa will be a high prioroity for them no matter how much they might prefer to talk about politics and philosophy instead of their bio labs.

lonestardad, what do you know about New College? I really, really like their philosophies, but because I could go to a more selective school I'm wanting to hear more about it's academic reputation.
