Transferring to Berkeley

My friend wants to transfer to Berkeley as soon as possible. Next fall he will be attending Rice University as a freshman, but wants to transfer to Berkeley, because Rice was actually not the best choice for him.

Is it possible that he could apply as a sophomore transfer to Berkeley? Or would he have to wait to apply as a junior transfer, because of the credits he would need to have?

Thank you.

He needs 60 semester credits, you can not apply as a sophomore, and it will be really difficult as an out of state student.

hey there,

just joined this forum.

I am in 2nd semester currently at CC and want to transfer to UCB/UCLA. i have a grade C on my transcript in an elective. will this affect my application?

Also when i apply to transfer in November will they just lookk at the GPA at the time i.e 2 semesters, or will they look at my fall 2008 grades aswell?

Thanks

Yes a C will hurt your application. They will look at your fall semester grades. A C will not kill your application but will hurt your GPA. Berkeley takes a holistic approach which means GPA is not the only factor but it is still a big factor.

ok thanks,

The reason for the bad grade was becuase i had just moved to the U.S from England.

can i explain this too them on the application?

Also i have a lot of voluntary work, leadershipd things from England. Does this count, or does it all need to be done at CC?

Thanks

As long as your ECs are at the college level they will consider it. If you like you can explain the grade.

Regarding ECs, unless they are major-related or indicate specific personal growth, dont even bother putting them on your application. Unlike one we filled in high school, transfer application is all about showing how well you have been preparing, not how bright of a student you are.

I have to disagree at least for Berkeley. I have discussed this Issue with several Berkeley reps and they often say how much more important ECs are than students know. At least this is true for Berkeley, I would assume that UCLA also takes into consideration your ECs. I think that ECs are really not needed for all the other UCs.

EC’s are extra curricular stuff correct??

vazman… I had a C in my Mandarin class and that did not hurt me for acceptance at any of the schools I applied to. You should be fine as long as you keep up your overall GPA. btw, I didn’t explain my C on my app.

Yea ECs are extracurriculars.

thanx for your help guys

Just so everyone knows I got into berkeley with a mid 3.6 and absolutely no pre reqs done. (got accepted to ucla as well where I have to decided to go). I think the EC’s and my essay (kind of obvious) got me into berkeley. I did not do any crazy amount of ECS just some basic student gov. positions, AGS, Honors Transfer Program, and a medium amount of community service (may 2 hours a well). Just have something in there. The essay is really what gets you in if you have around a 3.5 as the average gpa I believe is 3.7.

OH and their is a transfer program for berkeley, even in socal. I believe its geared to underrepresented minority students but I am not sure I remember reading about it though.
note: I had two C’s on my record, but I did explain it. I think it is all very important to note I got a 4.0 in the last 34 units.

^Did you transfer from a CC? What major did you apply as?

sorry berkeley is no longer accepting students ever again
