Hey, I'm currently in BioE: Premed with the intention of transferring to BioE: Bioinformatics. I was told that the BioE department looks at at the GPA of 4 courses to determine admission into the major: Chem 6A, BILD 1, Math 20B, and Math 20C.

My AP test scores are:

a 5 in Chemistry, allowing me place out of Chem 6A-C
a 5 in Biology, allowing me place otu of BILD 1 and BILD 2
probably a 4 or a 5 in Calculus BC, both of which would allow me to place out of Math 20B.

How would placing out of at least 2 (maybe 3) of these 4 classes affect my admission into the BioE: Bioinformatics major? Would it mean that the BioE department only looks at my Math 20C grade, or will I have to retake the courses I placed out of so the department has a more accurate method of admission, or will they assume that I recieved an A+ in the 2 or 3 other courses? (I sure hope it's the latter =P)

Any advice from people who are or have been in similar situations would be awesome. Thanks.

i dunno about their exact response, but they're not going to assume AP score of 5 = A+ in the class. if you look at the AP score distributions, about 15-20% of the top test takers receive a 5. i can assure you that the top 15% of a college lecture class WON'T be receiving an A+.

Well, some people might not think so -- the issue comes up more often than you think, as juniors and seniors start tackling med school applications and wonder how to equate their AP scores with prerequisites of "one year of college biology/chem/etc"

Oh, I thought the section with the parenthesis would make it kind of evident since there's a "=P" after it. Oh well, I can't take it out. The rest of my post is completely serious though.

they just look at the GPA from the remaining screening courses, im going through the same thing right now.
also, you dont technically have to apply for the premajor at the end of your frosh year, you can continue taking the next two screening courses of CSE11 and CSE12, and then apply spring soph year and get directly admitted...doesnt matter to them
also make sure you follow the bioInf major flowchart
and fyi if you didnt know, bioInf is heavily focused on comp programming and algorithms, i was talking to a bioInf grad student the other day and he was telling me about the differences in the majors..
and lastly--im glad theres someone else looking to get into bioInf. theres not that many of us out there : )

Oh, so just the remaining courses? COOL!

Do you have to apply spring soph year or can you apply earlier? Because theoretically I could be done with the screening courses by the end of fall quarter frosh year since I also got a 5 on Computer Science AB...so I just need to take Math 20C and CSE 12 during the fall quarter and be done!

Oh, and I think I heard it's easier if you do apply for the premajor.

And yeah, I was far more interested in Bioinformatics than Premed because I like programming, or at least I liked it in high school, but the department said I could only transfer if I had a major within the Bioengineering department, and they wouldn't let me do Bioengineering or Biotech, so yeah. I really hope I get accepted...

yea im sure you could apply early since you have those out of the way
and as terms of it being easier to get in premajor, technically, yes, but there are so few people transferring in that im not sure at this point in time it would be a huge difference
and also if you turn in the app early, (which can be found on the bioeng website, im pretty sure), they might not get back to you until spring qtr, but..yea, looks like youve def got a good thing started there for you

correction..I cant find the app online anymore, but you can just go to the bioengineering hall fall qtr and pick one up, theyre just chillin in the wall in the entryway of the counseling offices
and fall qtr they have intro group counseling, so you can ask them any questions you have then too
