Hi, Im currently a sophomore student at a Community College in California majoring in history. Over the past few months I’ve been thinking about applying to Brown University as a 2014 junior transfer student. I unfortunately started community college rough I got three Cs my first semester and then my second semester I received one D and three As. I received a D in Trigonometry: / but, even though I received a D in trig I will be still advancing to Calculus in the fall (I re-took the placement exam and scored into Calculus the second time around). I am more than confident that I will receive an A in Calculus. I also plan on retaking Trig while taking Calculus just so the D doesn’t look that bad. The reason why I received a D in trig was because I didn’t care. But, now I really care about my grades more than ever and I really want to further my studies in History at Brown (Im going to receive nothing lower than an A during my sophomore year). And if youre wondering my high school transcript sucks as well! I attended one of the best high schools in America (top 100) and I did not take advantage of this. I basically was never into educating myself until now. Growing up I hated reading primarily because my elementary school teachers continuously shot down my confidence when I had to read aloud in class. And, I was often told by my teachers that I wasn’t going to amount to anything because, I wasn’t able to compete with my peers. So as a result I hated educating myself. But, now Im in love with learning. Since Im a history major I’ve been recently influenced by polymaths of the Renaissance Era and, I now sort of want to master every subject I venture into. So my question is what are my chances of getting accepted into Brown University or even Northwestern University? Im a legacy to Northwestern (dad, uncles, aunts, grandparents all graduated from northwestern) so Im not concerned with Northwestern but, I dont really want to study at Northwestern. I want to study at Brown! Im truly in love with Brown! I can imagine myself studying at Brown but, I cant imagine myself studying at an institution like Northwestern or UC Berkeley. So my question is given that my transcript has three Cs, one D, two Ws, and the rest or As what are my chances of being accepted into Brown? I feel like it isn’t impossible but, my GPA sucks thanks to the D I received in Trig. I would have had a 3.75 overall GPA by the end of sophomore year if it wasn’t for that stupid D! Any advice would be highly appreciated.

■■■■■? ****??

Thinking the same.

SAT/ACT score?

1990,which I know isn’t that great of a score. My dad forced me to take it my junior year of high school. I didn’t really prepare for it. I wish I scored higher. But, I was talking to one of my uncles who’s friend is an admissions officer at Northwestern and he said SAT’s aren’t very relevant when applying as a transfer student. So im assuming Brown is the same way.

In case you’re not a ■■■■■, your chances of getting into Brown with this resume are extremely low. Your SATs are unimpressive (below Brown’s standards for freshmen), and the fact that you’ve gotten D’s and C’s in a community college looks very bad.

You should talk to a transfer counselor at your school about some more realistic options. Northwestern is likely also going to be out of the question, but maybe CSUs or some of the UCs would be more reasonable.
