Hey, I had a quick question about transferring to Cal. I am a second year community college student with a 4.0 gpa. [37 units transferrable]. My major is history, and to transfer to Cal, on assist.org it says you need to complete 1 history course in each of 4 separate areas. I have completed 6 history classes, all A's, however, the class I was supposed to take this semester to cover area 3 [Asia, Africa or Latin America classes] got canceled and I was not able to take it. My question is that since I am going to be applying this November, how bad is it that I will not have finished the 3rd area for a grade and thus have to wait until the spring semester to finish the class. Does not completing that one class dramatically bring down my chances at getting in? Also if you could tell me overall my chances [if you know] for getting in to ucla, I already have the igetc as well as the assist.org history requirements done [4 history classes, i have taken 6] with a 4.0 gpa. Also, does anyone know the benefit of taking even more history classes in the spring semester to increase ones chances of getting accepted as a transfer? Thank you very much.

I don't think that you are necessarily expected to finish all of your pre-reqs by the time you apply. You should be fine as long as you finish the rest of the pre-reqs by the end of the Spring semester. And you MUST have 60 transferable units.

^ Sixty transferable units also by the end of the Spring semester, to clarify.

I'm a history major at Cal and had my first day of classes yesterday. I transferred in from College of the Canyons in Valencia.

I had three out of five pre-reqs completed when I applied to Cal. It is a common misconception (especially among people new to this board) that not having them done by the time you apply will hurt you. It won't. So to answer your question of if it will dramatically bring down your chances...no. Bring down your chances even a little?...not even.

Also, if there is one thing I learned from all my dealings with people in the admissions dept at Cal it is that they are normal, reasonable people. If your CC isn't offering that Asian/Latin American/African history class, then they understand that is no fault of your own and you're good to go. I suggest in Area 3 of your personal statement to explain what happened with that course. Just 1-2 sentences and right to the point.

I doubt taking more history courses will help you at all. The people who score your app probably have nothing to do with the field of history. It means nothing to them what you used to fill your 60 units with as long as they're UC transferable. However, if you are as passionate about history as I am, you'll probably want to take those classes for fun anyway.

If I may add one more piece of advice. If I were you I would shoot for completing 70 units at CC. I didn't find out until orientation that if you enter Cal with 70 units completed at CC, you only need to do 50 at Cal for your undergrad degree. I entered with 60 so I have 60 more to go at Cal. This is fine, although it would have been nice to only need to do the 50 which would have freed me up more time to devote to my honors thesis (more on that when you get to Cal) which consists of 30-50 pages of original research.

Good luck!

^^ Seconding Ed's sentiments. During the application process you'll be asked to list what classes you will take at your cc before you transfer to Cal. If you haven't finished the required prereqs you can list them at that time.

That was helpful info... thank you both.

the only thing i should add is that there is no longer area 3 of the personal statement. there are only 2 questions for this year.

Just like Ed said, it won't matter if you finish your pre-req in the last semester. Oh and you have a very good chance of getting in with a 4.0. I would feel pretty confident if I was you.
