Hey guys, Im currently in UCR as a freshmen. It's a great school and all, however im not liking the environment here, i plan to transfer to Cal after my sophmore year. However, I was thinking about transferring to a CC for my sophmore year, because it seems to have a lot of better benefits. I can save a lot of money and my chance of transferring into Cal is higher. Is that a good idea?

that is a really bizzare plan. are u trying to transfer to cc so that u will have the same benefit of other cc students who get priority for transfer to uc?
exactly what part of uci do u dislike? i mean uci is very good and if u transfer out, what if u are rejected by cal? are u going to transfer back to uci?

First, im from UCR not UCI. Im not saying it's a bad school, its just if i want to transfer to another school to finish my BS degree, there really isnt any point in staying here when i can get the same education for my GE at a much cheaper price.

And Cal isnt my only choice, UCLA and UCSD are my choices as well. Also, there are programs in the cc that guarantees admission to certain UC's so im not worry about that part. I just need some insights.

jj123, I understand where you are getting at. It is very hard to transfer from UC to another UC.

I honestly think that going to a CC, even..right away, is a great plan--not only do you save money, but also can use the advantage of the admission agreements from CCCs to the UCs.

I say, "go for it"...only if you promise to yourself that you will exceed in the classes and commit to the TAAs, because there won't be any looking back to Riverside once you're out.

This is a tough decision...and I wish you good luck.

Thanks sofa for your insights.

I realize i also have to leave all my friends whom i have greatly bonded w/ ever since college started, this is one of the facotr that is mkaing it very difficult for me. I plan on attending medical school after 4yrs of undergrad. Will transferring from UC to CC then to UC again affect my admission in anyway?

Also, if i transfer to CC, i only have to stay there for 1 year to get the units required before I can transfer to a UC right?

Yup, just one year at CC because the classes you've taken at UCR should transfer over to CCC.

About the affecting your med school apps...it all comes down to how you do in the 3rd and 4th year of undergrad. Med schools only look at your undergrad work..and if you are able to get into Cal or UCLA for your 3rd & 4th year, then it shows the great transition...so I think it would actually look good... (but this is all just my opinion). So I would ask this to a Med School admissions officer just to be safe...

Have you looked into any CCs yet that you might want to go to? I suggest that you look at Foothill College...It has a TAA with UCLA if you become their Honors Student.

Mtsac, LA Pierce, LA Valley have the highest percentage of UCLA admission (53-54%)
Santa Monica has by far the highest number of people admitted to UCLA (~750 people, 15% all admits)

Some other great CCC:

PCC
De Anza
Foothill (as mentioned by sofa)
El Camino
Diablo Valley
Glendale
Orange Coast

I do not live in California. But, I do not see anything wrong with swapping things over to a Community College for a little while. You are not alone in swapping things over to Community College and I do not rightly see how you could ever be penalized for doing such a thing. Some folks have to actually temporarily transfer to a Community College for financial reasons and I do not see what the big deal would be at all. The most important thing is to work really hard and do what you have to do so you can go back to actual University later on down the line.

This is Mildred's rant for the day...

At least you are not like my one dumb and lazy "pal." My one dumb and lazy "pal" is going to a Community College after graduating from University only to circumvent paying students loans. That is soo silly. I mean, dude! I reckon it would be easier to work out a payment plan for the student loans, eh? Or even, like get a job!? Shucks.

hey guys thanks a lot it really cleared up a lot of things for me. By the way, are there any TAA for Cal in CC's?

Also, i guess the con of leaving a 4yr university is i wont have access to opportunities such as lab or pre-med club etc. Anyone here know where I can go to get necessary extracurricular at cc?
