transferring to columbia

I am currently a sophomore at a large NC state university. I attended a community college for one year and received a 3.78 gpa and then decided to transfer to a four-year. This past semester I received a 4.0 gpa. I expect to get a 3.7-4.0 gpa for this spring semester. I have around 70 volunteer hours in the past 6 months and am currently involved in research at a local medical school. I would be able to get very good LORs from my science professors. What do you think my chances, if any, are?

EDIT: high school grades are not good. 2.95 gpa and a 1030 (english and math; don't remember my writing score) on the SAT. Hopefully if I am applying as a junior they would not weigh my high school experience as much as my college experience.

Poor chances due to high school grades, as they are a considerable factor in the decision process (unless you’re applying to GS). Transfer students are expected to have high school grades commensurate to those of freshman columbia college / seas students.

I think you at least have the scores to be considered, but obviously the full package is important. A near perfect GPA plus recs and ECs should make you competitive.

I decided I’m going to apply this weekend. It really can’t hurt to try. Thank you for the replies! Hopefully if I state my reasons for wanting to transfer, have a strong personal statement, and very good LORs maybe they will overlook my (horrid) high school gpa.

Congrats! You’re really inspiring. I’ll be in your place in a couple of years so I wish you (and future me) the best of luck!

If you think of it, update us on whether you’re accepted as well.

Also, have you considered to applying to other top schools as well? The more you apply to, the higher chance you have of getting into one.

Thank you :). Yes I’ll be applying to Cornell also. I am really only considering the New York ivys right now due to having family around that area. I may, however, apply to some other schools in the north east just in case. I also applied to UNC Chapel Hill if I must stay in NC. I do have a good research position going right now but nothing can beat the connections you acquire at top Universities.

Good luck to you!

If you are already in a University make those grades happen and get some stellar extracurriculars. Hopefully you and I both will have some luck this fall :)

I’m currently a junior in High school. I’m one of those classic underachievers. I didn’t even want to go to college until this year. My grades have improved drastically but I still struggle with focus and organization.

For someone so young I have a lot of regrets. I had a lot of potential as a kid and I think everyone expected a lot more out of me than a 3.1 GPA and a rather uninspiring high school experience. Now I’ve decided what I want to do (for the most part), and that includes going to a good school.

I know that I won’t get into my ideal school as a freshman, so transferring is my main bet. I think it’s too late to finish off with a good GPA, so I’m trying to stay hopeful.
:)

You’re already starting off better than I did. If I have a chance you definitely do. I found college to be a much more enjoyable experience and not as much ‘grunt work.’ If you can enjoy what you’re doing the grades will undoubtedly follow.

I cheer you on! I hope you get in. Tell me if you did and the difficulty of the process if you can!

Sent from my DROIDX using CC App

I will make sure to update my progress. I’m going to wait until the weekend to start my essays, lots of work due next week!

I must say, I was expecting to be shut down a lot more than I have been in this thread. Are there any success stories that are somewhat like mine? I plan to address how I’ve grown as a scholar and an individual somehow in my essay (I have yet to look at the prompt). Anyway, thanks for the support guys.

What if he re-wrote the SAT and showed considerable imrprovement?

seafood - good luck.

I am quite confident that if I were to re-take the SAT I could score near perfect, but as far as I know the SAT is only an indication of how well you will do at a college level. Damn if I could only go back and smack myself upside the head multiple times.

After looking at the essay prompts I’m pretty sure I can come up with a stunning essay. Hopefully they don’t screen my app out before they even look at it :(.

I’ve found that internet forums, although helpful, also tend to attract rude, pessimistic people who use their anonymity to discourage others.

As a person who has read perhaps every transfer forum out there, I’ve learned that you have to take each post with a grain of salt. For every helpful, encouraging poster there are three that want to remind you how difficult and unlikely it is for you to be admitted.

just remember that top schools, although elite, are still open to anybody intelligent and hard working enough:)

I’m applying from a community college as well and I also have around the same credentials! I hope we get in man! I actually went to their information session and spoke to them. Let’s beat the odds :)!

Then I’d say do what you can to show that you’ve improved and let the chips fall where they may.

After going back and looking at my old documents from high school plus my hours from college I realized I have a total of about 300 community service hours. Maybe more than that, I remember I helped the football coach run drills and worked out with team for about 50 hours (I just don’t find that very meaningful).

Yeah I am going to try some other places. I have family attending Syracuse and living around that area. I’m not really familiar with the New York area but living in state is closer than NC.

Would I be able to transfer into GS? I’m a traditional student and from my understanding you have to be a non-traditional for admission. Hopefully I’m wrong.
