I applied to Cornell ED to the College of Human Ecology in Nov 2017, and was denied admission in Dec 2017. I’m going to be attending BU’s Sargent College this fall, but I still have a burning desire to transfer to my dream school Cornell. When I applied I had a 31 ACT non superscored, 770 SAT II in French, numerous national awards, 2 months of research at a T10 medical school under my belt, and was in the IB program with HL Bio, HL Chem, HL English L&L. I’m aware that transfer admissions put much more emphasis on how well you do in college.
If I were to re-apply as a transfer student, is it smart/ok to apply to the College of Human Ecology again or should I choose another college within Cornell? I don’t want to hurt my chances by re-applying to the college I was rejected at. Also, does anyone have information about re-applying as a transfer to a college they were denied at in general? Any info would be appreciated.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to enter your new school with the intention of transferring. This may prevent you from making friends, getting involved, getting to know your professors, etc. Essentially… going in with the desire to transfer to a “dream school” may prevent you from achieving success at your current school …one that accepted you with open arms. Why not be a star at BU? Remember… it’s not where you go- it’s what you do while there.
Cornell rejected you for a reason … and BU accepted you for a reason. Why not give BU a chance before thinking about leaving? Why don’t you try and really succeed while there… instead of dreaming about Cornell?
If… after a year… you are really unhappy…but still manage to have a very strong GPA etc… then you can think about transferring. But… you still might not get into your “dream school.”
I’m assuming you applied to Hum Ec because it best aligned with your academic goals. Unless you’ve changed your mind about your major, I’m not sure why you would want to apply to a different college. Also, while there are individual colleges at Cornell, I’m pretty sure your name/application would still come up in their system so another college would know you were not accepted the first time around.
I agree with the first poster about being 100% open to loving BU. It’s a great school and the transfer acceptances rates at Cornell are less than the ED rates you just faced.
@momofsenior1, I agree with you…but there are people who think that Hum Ec is the ‘easier’ back door into Cornell b/c it’s admissions rate is comparatively high.
OP, the best odds for transferring to Cornell are from a NY state community college.
IMO, your odds of success in transferring from BU to Cornell during 1st year are negligible: you were straight up denied ED- you weren’t even deferred, much less offered the transfer option, so it’s not as if it was a close call. The only thing that would be different if you apply next April is one term of college grades - the rest will be the same HS record that the AdComm rejected last year, and that will be heavily weighed. If you apply after 1.5 years the HS record doesn’t come into play as much (for Hum Ec it does a tiny bit, but you have the classes that would matter).
Finally, if you do apply to transfer (this year or next) only re-apply to Hum Ec if that is truly where your heart is and you have serious credibility in your ECs for it. If it is where your heart truly is, don’t forget to review the required courses for whichever major you were interested in.
