Transferring to FSU

So after deciding that I want to go to law school after undergrad I thought it best to transfer to my state flagship and save the pricey east coast schools for gradschool. I just wanted to know what kind of stats I should be aiming for as a junior transfer. I would transfer as a sophomore but I fell about 4 points short on my ACT math score (which I will not apologize for since I nearly aced the english components, but whatever) and there is no way to get around the benchmark according to a rep I spoke to. So what kind of stats should I be hoping for? I have 12 AP credits that FSU accepts according to their chart (while the school I go to now, FIU, takes 9). I plan on taking 14 credits this fall, 15 in the spring, 12 in the summer, and 12 in the fall and transfer in the spring of my sophomore year (but I'll have 62-65 credits so I guess I'll automatically have my AA and be considered a junior?).

If ECs are considered I have already landed a job at a museum on campus, the Frost Art Museum, in the communications department. Oh, I will be applying as a creative writing major and plan to minor in communication studies. I've been snooping around the site and haven't seen any major prereqs for the major besides ENC 1101/1102, the former I have with AP credit and the latter this fall. I'll probably join the pre-law fraternity here and another club thats less academic but not entirely unproductive.

Thoughts? I want to leave FIU as soon as possible!

One more thing: I noticed that FSU costs a great deal more than FIU (its about $18k vs my school's current $4.5k). I'm assuming my bright futures will roll over, but should I expect a full ride like the one I am receiving at FIU? I'll also have to live on or near campus, something that I am not currently doing.

20+ views not one response? I guess this information is available somewhere and I missed it?

I guess you’ve seen this page: [FSU Admissions | Transfer | Admissions | Apply Online](<a href=“FSU Admissions | Error 404 page not found”>FSU Admissions | Error 404 page not found)

Your bright futures will absolutely roll over to FSU as it would to any state university. I know that FSU has a great creative writing program so they would be a good fit. You would be considered a junior but would not receive an AA from FIU as they are a Bachelors degree seeking school only. If you have any questions that I didn’t answer let me know. Oh and how much is it per credit hour at FIU vs FSU…it can’t be that big of a difference since they are state schools. When I went to FSU it was like 125 a credit hour.

^ I think he’s saying that it’s about 4.5k at FIU because of scholarships.

Thanks parent2noles, I have seen the page. The question I posed in my original post is not answered there. The FSU site merely provides minimum requirements for consideration not a profile of successful candidates (like the one on the freshman admissions page). I was looking for a realistic idea of what kind of stats would make me a competitive candidate (aside from having met x requirement, which most people easily fulfill). FIU is about 4.5k since I don’t live in dorms, and that is covered by scholarships/grants. FSU would be much more expensive since I would have to live on/near campus (I think housing is 8k a year according to the site). In regards to that I wanted to know if it was common for students to have to take out loans or if housing costs are usually taken care of with aid. Sorry if I didn’t clarify exactly what I was looking for, if anything I thought I said too much :p!. I did dig up some old threads from searching but they were pretty dated and there have been some changes to bright futures/education funding in general so I figured the admissions process might have been altered as a result.

I was also a bit confused about the whole AA thing. I thought that after 60 credits I would receive an associates, but I guess I’d only get it from a community college. On the site it says that transfers with AAs get priority consideration. Would I be rejected over a CC graduate even if I had 60+ credits and a 3.5 ish GPA (I’m shooting for a 3.7-.8)? Should I transfer to my local CC, Miami-Dade College, to receive my AA?

I don’t think so because you have experience at a “university” and you have an excellent college GPA. I really don’t think you have much to worry about. It is harder to get in as a freshman than a transfer because of the vast amounts of people that apply as a freshman. I had 4 friends that transfered there from USF and got in with about a 3.2. Hope this helped.

It did, thank you FSUNOLEGIRLRN!

To transfer in, you need to be mindful of the Academic Maps that fsu has, and for the major you plan to have at FSU, you must be on MAP to be accepted as a transfer. I would also work on getting most of of your gen ed requirements done. I think you will need to ask about your chances after you have completed a year to year and a half of college with a GPA that tells us how you are doing. EC’s don’t matter much as a transfer.

Instate tuition is nearly the same, so the difference must be room and board?? Tuition for instate for a year is not $18,000 at FSU. The COA is but that includes tuition room, board, books etc. BF will transfer. If you come in as an AA transfer from a CC/SC, there are scholarships available both from FSU and from the CC/SC you transferred in from. But there is little other scholarship money for someone changing universities. Financial aid is available if you qualify via FAFSA. You mentioned a full ride, but not whether that was merit scholarship or financial aid. Most of us on CC consider a full ride to be merit aid. That won’t happen at FSU. If you qualify for financial aid, some with be loans and work-study. What kind of aid exactly are you getting at FIU?

You will be more competitive if you have completed your foreign language requirements. This is separate from any HS requirements.

An AA is way more than just 60 hours. It means you have fulfilled the requirements for an AA. Anyone leaving a state Univeristy can ask for an AA certificate if they meet AA requirements. For an AA you need to meet all Gordon Rule requirements for English and Math, CLAST requirements, as well as requirements in oral communication, lit, humanities, social sciences/history and science.

CC transfers with an AA do get priority over someone transferring Universities, but you are not applying to a limited access major, so with a good college GPA you should not have a problem. But from what I am trying to decipher from your post, you must be a recent high school grad who as already decided to transfer after either just a summer semester or prior to starting out in the fall at FIU. Without a college GPA (AP’s don’t count) it is hard to predict anything at this point. Why are you already planning to leave FIU when you just started?

You are correct, I am a recent high school grad who will be starting at Florida international University in the fall (on Monday actually) and have already decided I would like to transfer. I mentioned the AP credits because I thought 60 credits was equivalent to an AA, but that is not the case so they are sort of irrelevant. I did mention in my last post that the difference in cost would be due to room and board since I would have to live on or near campus. I will be living at home while attending my current university. As far as CLAST, according to my unofficial transcript I am exempted from all of the requirements with test scores except for the computation portion. I will fulfill that milestone by taking two math before transferring. As far as gordon rule requirements I’m pretty sure I’m on track to completing them since they are a part of the University Core Curriculum students here are required to fulfill in their first 60 hours.

I took two years of foreign language in high school and will take two more foreign language classes before transferring. I am required to take college level foreign language by my current university anyhow. I seem to be on track for the major’s academic map, as for the first four semesters the only milestones are ENC1011/2, two math classes (I will be taking finite math and intro to stats), and fulfilling CLAS.

My aid at FIU is a combination of Scholarships and grants which include a Pell grant, Academic competitiveness grant, Federal Work/Study, and Bright Futures. I have already decided to leave because it was my last choice school and due to financial limitations I kind of had to go (my mother has something against MDC, or else I would have gone there). My brother goes to FIU and I am already familiar with the campus and a lot of the people that go there, it is not an environment I would like to be around for very long. Its not bad, just not for me at all. I also do not enjoy living at home and commuting, its not how I envisioned my college experience.

Thanks for all the great replies!
