Transferring to GeorgiaTech from Uni of Surrey

Hello everyone,

I’m currently a 2nd year computer science undergrad at University of Surrey UK. I will most likely be spending next year on industry (year-long internship). Before uni I was in a relatively bad position and wasn’t able to do well on my International Bac (31), but thankfully I’m fine and back on track now. I wanted to apply as a transfer starting for the fall 2019 for junior year at GeorgiaTech for Computer Science and I was wondering whether that would be possible.Up to date I have worked at two Software Start-Ups created a few mobile ups and I am currently working on an Artificial Intelligence Research Project at University for summer and I have also spend a summer camp at Imperial College London 3 years ago. My grades are all a UK 1st (always 80% and above). Do you think it’s doable, any tips, advice? Thanks for your time.

Best,
George

Do you understand how our university systems work?
US schools require a number of courses in non-major areas in order to transfer and graduate. You need to be able to qualify to transfer to be accepted to Georgia Tech. Plus, admissions are competitive so you have to have excellent grades.
Being a CS major is fine, but you need to check what Georgia Tech requires for transfer. Did you go online to check transfer requirements?
Also, you need to be able to afford their fees. There is no financial aid for international students. So assume $51K per year.

@“aunt bea” thank you for your reply. Yes I have checked and for CS all the requirements have to do with English, Calculus and some general Science requirements which from my understanding need to be proven through the credit evaluation process. Regarding my grades, they are a UK’s 1st which would translate to 4.00 GPA. My question would be more in terms of is it okay tha my uni is not Cambridge for example and does all the work/research experience I have done take into account?

To get into the schools in the US: GPA and coursework-first and foremost. Your work experience would be considered as an EC. They don’t care where you transfer from.

You will need to have a foreign credit evaluation performed by WES, Josef Silny or a NACES member. If that evaluation shows that you have met all the requirements for a transfer to Tech and that you have a 4.0 equivalent GPA, you should have a good shot, especially with your demonstrated interest and work experience in your field.

That said, as an international student, you may be at a disadvantage to US students and especially to GA state residents. CS is a heavily subscribed major at Tech and it may be comparatively harder to transfer into CS in a given year.

If you can afford the cost and your transcript evaluation indicates you have met all the minimum course requirements, I think an application is worthwhile.

@InPursuit many thanks for your reply, very helpful and encouraging. Would you advise on sending an email explaining the situation to find out more ?

Go ahead and email. Admissions will be happy to help explain next steps and options. admission@gatech.edu

@InPursuit many thanks!

I have seen transfers into CS each year at GaTech in the last two years. There were dropouts and a few transfer students allowed in in 2017 and 2018. They are cream of the crop for grades and test scores. GaTech has an on line system for students at other American universities, including community colleges, to see which classes are accepted for GaTech credit. Here is the link to the international credit review:

GaTech favors IB diploma grads, slightly. Even with a 31, you need to look at your individual scores on IB exams
and see what GaTech might give you for credits. GaTech gives credits for certain scores on both Higher Level
and Standard level exams. I am pretty sure you can still use those test scores as a transfer student.

If you took the SAT subject exam in chemistry, GaTech gives college credit for certain scores on that examination too.

The class registration system at GaTech is seniority based, so your priority in that system will depend directly on
how many credits you are awarded. Also individual threads in CS get priority for the required classes in that thread so look over the threads now to see which ones you want to study. You have to complete requirements in two threads to get a CS bachelors degree from GaTech.

There is also a campus in France, with less class offerings than Atlanta.
