Transferring to IU

My friend is thinking about transferring to IU in either the Spring of 08 or Fall of 09. Could he get in with a 2.8-2.9 ish from a state university? He plans to eventually apply to Kelley...but this does not matter for general transfer admission correct? Any insight would be great.

I'm presuming your friend is probably going to be a freshman starting in the Fall at his state university. Based upon this, Indiana University is likely to grade him about 1/3rd on his first semester of college, about 1/3rd on his high school GPA (and rank), and about 1/3 on his SAT test scores and extracurriculars at his new college and in high school.

What Indiana Univ - Bloomington (and the Kelley school at the end of the third semester of college, which will be the end of his first semeter at IU-B) will probably look for is the following:

(1) High school rank in the top 50% minimum and top 40% or so is preferred
(2) Critical Reading + Math SAT scores at or around the IU average (which is about 1170 for an average student or 1235 for a Kelley applicant--he/she should be close to the Kelley number if they are borderline with their GPA)
(3) At least a 2.75 average in college (and if he/she is going to apply to Kelley, they will need to be able to get to at least 3.0 by the end of the third semester of college, since they will need to apply to Kelley at least by that time to graduate in 4 years.
(4) The courses that are required for the Kelley application will need to be at least a 3.0 (4 out of the following 5 courses: English Composition, Intro to Management, Business Calculus, Finite Math, Intro to Computers), and these will need to be completed by the end of his/her first semester of the sophomore year.
(5) At least some extracurriculars related to the business major (or an economics major) in his/her junior/senior year of high school and freshman year of college.

As long as all of the above can be met, then I would expect them to both be able to get into Indiana University and to also be able to get into Kelley.

P.S. The only reason I list the Kelley stuff above (even though it, of course, isn't required to get into IU-B), is because if they plan to get into Kelley also, there is no reason to think that getting into IU will get them into Kelley unless they also meet those requirements.

Good luck to your friend (and to you).

Yes, I had a friend who got in with a 2.8 from Western Michigan University and 30 credits.

Thanks guys.
Calcruzer...he is actually going to be a sophomore in the fall just like me so I don't think they will be looking at his high school grades/scores. And I am encouraging him to come here in spring of his sophomore year so that things move faster (as opposed to the fall of his junior year). If he takes a business computers class (similar to K201) and english composition etc at his own school...will he get credit for those at IU and will they count towards his Kelley admission?

barren_field, it would probably be extremely difficult to find a class out of state that gets transfer credit for K201. According to the Credit Transfer website at IU, only two non-Indiana schools (one in Germany; one in Massachusetts) had someone who had credit for K201 for a course transfered to IU. Intro To Microcomputers - CIS 101 at Ivy Tech receives credit for K201. If you friend lives in Naperville the closest IVY Tech would be in Gary or East Chicago, CIS 101 class meets June 9-Aug 2 on both campuses. Also, I think you can test out of K201, but it would probably be tough to do. If your friend took K201 at IU in the Spring, he would have to take X201 in the summer in order to be able to take I-core in the first semester of his junior year.

What you can do for K201 is to take the class online at Ivy Tech. I know Ivy Tech in Indianapolis offers this for the fall.
