Transferring to Michigan...

I am currently at Western Michigan University and want to transfer for this Spring admissions. My gpa freshman year was horrible and i ended up with a 2.6. But my sophomore year was 4.0 both terms bringing my GPA to 3.4. Would a 3.4 be too low to transfer, and will my boost in grades during my 2nd year help me in any way?

It depends on what classes you took Sophomore year. If you took challenging classes, your chances are good, but if you took easy classes, your 4.0 may not carry as much weight.

Michigan tends to give preference to Community College transfers as to transfers from other colleges and universities. Going to a school in Michigan does help though. My brother is trying to get into UM, and an admissions rep told him at their college fair that you typically need a 3.3 to get in. Might as well apply if you want to go there, you have a chance, and you'll never know if you don't apply. Had a friend who got in with a 3.5 as a transfer from an OOS institution.

does this schedule sound challenging enough?

Fall: 16 credits
STAT 366 Intro to Statistics
ADA 225 Drug Abuse in Society
ECON 202 Microeconomics
PSCI 200 Political Science

I don't think they care about your schedule strength, such as taking honors courses or the highest level offered, just that you are taking the classes that will transfer to your degree there (in other words, equivalent classes to the one's at UM). Look at your degree program and take the courses that they recommend you should take.

I transferred in with a 3.25

awesome, thanks for the hope

bumppppppppp.

I transfered in with a 3.93. OOS.

I transferred in with a 3.95 from Western Michigan University. Don't take any classes from Mackey...

This isn't a bragging thread.

yeah but i kinda want to hear what others got in with, any bit helps

I'm so much better than you. :)

It's not a bragging thread. I came from the exact same college the TC is from.

Taking classes from Mackey is GPA death. I've given my advice to him in the transfer thread, and it really just stays the same.

Rather than giving advice, talking to counselors, asking what is needed, you're just listing a perfect GPA and said "I did it!" Well of course you did, anyone with a 3.9+ GPA would be able to transfer to practically any school. That's when it's bragging. It's no different that the people who ask for chances who are well above the 75% mark in test scores and GPA.

Not for transfers, only for freshmen admissions. I had sent an email to adcoms and they said it didn't matter.

It does help, Michigan community college transfers have scholarship opportunities, and lower requirements than other community college transfers. Michigan has a program called M-Ties at the CC I go to where you get preferred admission if you take certain courses and achieve a certain GPA.

Okay sorry to hijack this thread. But is it more difficult to transfer for the winter semester instead of the fall semester? My friend goes wheaton college in IL (the best Christian college in the US) but wants to transfer to UM (I think her gpa is around a 3.6ish). Is it likely she'll get in for winter semester even though she's OOS?

Isn't it a little late to transfer for the Spring term? I thought the deadline for fall transfer was March 1.

Since you are transferring after your sophomore year, you have to pick a major. Your grades in the pre-requisite courses may be more important.

Niihla,
I don't know for sure, but I hear that it is actually easily to get in for the Winter term.

winter semester deadline is october 1st
spring is february 1st

but how are the admissions for winter semester compared to the fall semester?
