Transferring To Michigan

A friend of mine just got his deferral letter on Friday, and U of M is his dream school. Unfortunately, our counselor screwed the pooch and convinced him that it would be easier to apply to Engineering than LSA, and with his ****-poor math stats, his other scores (3.7 UW GPA, 30 ACT) will probably be overshadowed as they look over his app again.

With that in mind, what are his best odds for transferring in from other in-state schools? Would it be best to attend U of M - Flint/Dearborn? MSU? Or even Community College? Any advice is much appreciated.

The cheap route would be to go to community college for one or two years and get the best grades ever. Then transfer.

The fun route would be going to MSU. Bit more expensive but you’ll have a good social life there while your there. Just remember to study to get good grades and transfer.

Dearborn and Flint are the same as commmunity colleges. Just a bit more expensive. (I wouldn’t recommend this unless you have a special program in mind)

Ok, thanks for the input! But which school would accept the most credit, MSU? Does UMich take prefrence to certain colleges?

“Dearborn and Flint are the same as commmunity colleges. Just a bit more expensive.”

No, they’re more on the level of regional Michigan universities (EMU and Western and the likes).

I’m not too sure what you mean by “which school would accept the most credit”
It terms of credit hours, the maximum amount you can transfer is 60 I believe for both LSA and Engineering (regardless of where you’re coming from). In terms of credit equivalencies:

I know for a fact that Michigan does not really “prefer” you to go to any college before trying to transfer. I’ve lived in Washtenaw county for a really long time and I know that the community college here (WCC) acts as a stepping stone for people that really want to attend Umich but wasn’t accepted their freshman year. This is true for a couple other community colleges. I also know a lot of transfers from OOS colleges as well as Instate colleges like Michigan State. I really think that Michigan is open to transfers from any college. As long as you succeed academically, show strong desire to attend, and show that you are active in your current college, you can transfer.

For Engineering I think the deal is you can transfer as many credits as you want, but you must take 60 credits here to get a degree. So if you wanted to take the bare minimum to graduate, it would be 68 credits for transfer.

Though I am not sure about it, I know LSA and Engineering have different transfer rules.

If he lives close, Washtenaw Community College is a great choice. UM loves WCC students. Again just have to do well there, which shouldn’t be too hard for him.

Well, A2 is about an hour and a half drive from where we are. He is, however, very near U of M - Flint. He’s willing to do pretty much anything to get in, so if WCC is his best option, then he’ll probably do that, but why do they take preference to WCC kids over kids at a different U of M campus, despite them being in two very different leagues?

I definitely wouldn’t say they have a preference more for WCC kids, I just know from personal experience that all my friends going there have gotten in without an issue. I would guess that UM Flint would be the same if not better chances actually. They even have a mechanical engineering transfer-in program to main campus I believe.

UM-Flint is probably easier for transfer, but it’s also a lot more expensive, and they get kind of screwed over on some things (for instance, they filmed Engr 110 and just put the UM-Flint kids in a room to watch it on TV)

I think his best bet is to go to his local CC.

UM Dearborn or Flint would be a good option since most classes transfer in as equivalent credit (see online equivalencies). Additionally, Umich will transfer in his GPA if he attends dearborn or flint which may be helpful if he does well at one of them. I also believe the sister campuses are more respected than CC’s.

WCC has a specific program for transferring to U of M-AA called M-Pod. Look into it on their website.
