I am a current freshman at the Wharton School at UPenn. I applied to ND early last fall and was accepted, however I turned ND down when I decided to go to Penn instead. Now that I am here, I am wondering if I made the right decision. I am starting to miss the family aspect, school spirit, spirituality aspect, and campus beauty of ND. I grew up in South Bend and went to every football and basketball game for over 10 years so I know about these aspects quite well. Sometimes I wonder if I chose school based on prestige more than where I think I would have been the most happy. My question is, how hard would it be to transfer to ND assuming a solid GPA? Will the fact that I was previously admitted but declined to go hurt me? It's worth noting that I couldn't be in Mendoza because of enrollment restrictions, but the International Econ major interests me. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks and go irish

Give yourself time to settle in to Penn; my son is a freshman elsewhere, and Oct seems to be the time that the glossy fun has worn off and the hard work sets in – a natural time to second guess whether something else might have been “better.” My advice would be to commit yourself to this semester at a minimum, and preferably the year, before spending time mulling over transfer possibilities. Look for ways to get involved at Penn, to create your own community of shared interests and values.

If you grew up in South Bend, then you will always be able to “come home.” Get some bball tickets for winter break, spend some time doing what you enjoy in SB when you get back in town.

Penn is an incredible school, and Wharton is phenomenal – I would giving yourself much more time before throwing in the towel.

^^^I second that. Penn is very different from ND (I went to Wharton and my son is at ND) but it is a wonderful place. It is a new environment and you have to give yourself some time. Get involved in campus activities and definitely check out the Newman Center. There are always some growing pains when you move outside of your comfort zone but it will likely lead to new and exciting experiences and personal growth (as is the case for my son at ND). Not to mention, a Wharton degree will provide a boost to your career for the rest of your life. Both are great schools.

Like the above poster, you probably have a very strong chance of being admitted there as a transfer. My concern is that you’re already at The Wharton School at Penn. Are you aware that ND does NOT accept transfer students into their Mendoza Business School? Something to consider if staying on the business route. My son transferred from BU to ND as a sophomore and is now a senior and has really loved it. Best of luck to you as you consider the option of transferring – Penn’s a pretty great place though :)

Oh, and most recent transfer acceptance was 152 out of 440 – so roughly 40% – pretty good odds if you’ve followed their first year curriculum. If you’re missing one or two (at most) of their required courses and they accept you, it will most likely be contingent upon your completing that course(s) during the summer and obtaining a B or above. Again, best of luck in your decision as to whether to transfer.
