I went to a small liberal arts college in a small town and I realized that was not for me so I decided to transfer. I can be quiet at times but I would still like to go out and have fun. I got into northeastern and was really excited about it. I like the idea of the co-op. I also really like the joint majors and was thinking about doing one in psychology and Econ. However, I just got into Vanderbilt but never been to the campus. I wouldn’t be able to do a joint major and I’m not sure Vanderbilt fits with my personality. I know it’s a better school so I’m having a hard time making a decision. I wish I could go to the campus but for obvious reasons I can’t. I thought I would come here for some guidance. Any help would be great.
Just another student here, hopefully someone with some more CC experience picks up on this thread. However, if there’s one thing I’ve learned through this college process/binge-reading on here it’s that “better school” doesn’t always mean “the right school.” It sound like you really connected with Northeastern. Of course only you can know for sure, that could just be cause you didn’t have a chance to get to know Vanderbilt. While NE may not be on the same exact level, you’ll have the freedom to pursue the path that you want academically. I have friends who are there and you can definitely be challenged if that’s what concerns you. My advice? Reach out to some Vanderbilt students, get an honest sense of what the vibe is like/their experiences, Then make your choice by viewing each school holistically. There’s a lot to be said about fit. I have no doubt you’ll do great wherever you go, but it’s a lot easier to thrive when you’re comfortable where you are.
I think grengjai has good advice. My son will be a freshman at NEU and I know they have “Husky ambassador” students you can talk to so Vanderbilt must have some too. Or try Facebook or Instagram. It looks like both schools intend to have students on campus in the fall. My son has been quarantined for two months and I am hoping for a campus experience.
It sounds like your only reason for choosing Vanderbilt would be prestige. But the connections and experience you can get at NE with coops can easily overcome the prestige factor. Vanderbilt is the more traditional college experience but you don’t seem overly into that. I am sure kids at NE go out and have fun plenty when they are around.
Only if you are obsessed with rankings.
