Transferring to Northeastern

Hi so I’m going to transfer to northeastern after my freshman year (if i get accepted of course)… I’m fairly confident in my ability to get in BUT, i couldn’t go this year because of financial issues. Does northeastern consider transfer students for Merit scholarships?

I would doubt it. But I haven’t looked into transfer scholarships specifically.

What is going to change in your family that will allow Northeastern to be more affordable next year?

Well my grades suffered freshman and sophomore year of high school, and they picked up significantly my junior and senior year. however after freshman year i will have a pretty high GPA, so i was hoping that would help me be considered for merit aid. But also, the main job holder lost his job for quite a bit and just recently got a new job, but they still gave awful financial aid for whatever reason.

Based on reports here on CC some transfer students do receive merit aid, but not as generous as freshmen.

Based on what is posted on their website, they don’t list scholarships for transfer students.

What does this mean that you are fairly confident? Keep in mind that when you transfer, you will still have to submit your high school transcript along with your SAT scores. If you are planning on applying to Northeastern for sophomore year, your high school transcript will hold more weight in the admissions process than your one semester of college (you will only have one semester of credits under your belt when you submit your application).

@swainthings – what is your budget? How much can your family pay per year?

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.

  1. Enroll at your current college with the intention of staying there. Look for positive things about it. Get involved in some activities or clubs.
  2. Give the school a fair chance.
  3. If you decide to transfer...don't burn your bridges behind you. When you complete your FAFSA and Profile in OCTOBER do it for your current school and NEU. Do NOT withdraw from your current school until you are accepted AND have an affordable financial aid offer at another school.
  4. Don't assume that you will love one college over another. You might not love NEU as much as you think you do. The grass always seems to be greener...and also, the unattainable more appealing.
If NEU gave you inadequate FA and merit first time round, it won't be any better as a transfer. Even top freshman merit is about half the COA, so how much can you actually afford anyway? What changes makes you think a school you can't afford now will be affordable as a transfer?
