Transferring to NYU

Hey, I dont mean to repost this thread as it was already posted in another section earlier but i thought i had to repost it in the proper section. I am soon going to be a SUNY Geneseo student for fall 2009. For the people who have absolutely no clue about Geneseo, Geneseo is recognized as top suny according to statistics. That's besides the point though; what i'm trying to do as a business major (accounting) was to spend 2 years of hardwork at Geneseo then hopefully transfer out to the city. My questions are, how rigorous is NYU or perhaps NYU Stern? What do you think the bare minimum gpa i should be obtaining at Geneseo to even suggest transferring to NYU?

Thanks

Since you are majoring in accounting you will be applying to NYU Stern. These stats are off of their website.

Admissions
Undergraduate College*
Average SAT Score:1 1435
Average GPA: 3.79

Although your applications are reviewed holistically so your essays carry a lot of weight. I would aim for no lower than a 3.7 with a large course load to be safe.
Personally my stats were 1220 SAT, 3.86 GPA with 38 credits. Be sure to schedule courses that will fulfill as many of the prerequisites as you can.

To be honest, Stern is a tough cookie to crack for transfer students. If you peruse this year’s transfer thread, you’ll see that some people with 4.0’s and good EC’s were rejected (though not completing the pre-requisites for transfer admission may have played a role.) Don’t let me deter you though, there’s always a chance for transfer, and since you already know that you’d like to transfer to stern, you’ll most likely have these pre-requisites in mind while registering for classes and you’ll also be able to produce a more persuasive essay.

Note: Someone please correct me if I’m thinking of another school at NYU. I’d hate to give the wrong information out to a prospective transfer student.

Thanks for your replies. The only thing I am concerned about right now is the fact that i do not want to notify them with my SAT scores as my SAT scores are beyond horrid. I heard that if you transfer in your junior year they only look at college grades rather? Am i correct on that? I’ve asked some other kid that goes to Geneseo and she tells me it is impossible to transfer during junior year which actually scares me.
Someone please correct me on this. Thanks

you’re right, east; it’s Stern.

the only reason it’s so hard to transfer to Stern junior year is that it’s pretty much a “now or nothing” kind of deal. if you don’t get in for fall of your junior year, you’re graduating from Geneseo or a different business school. Stern only accepts fall transfer students. Stern needs you to complete a certain number of credits at Stern to be able to graduate.

they still want the scores, but they probably won’t weigh them as much.

as per: [NYU > Undergraduate Admissions > Applying for Admission > Transfer Applicants > Standardized Tests](<a href=“How to Apply”>How to Apply)

please make sure to take a look at their pre-reqs list: [NYU > Undergraduate Admissions > Applying for Admission > Transfer Applicants > Special Program Requirements](<a href=“How to Apply”>How to Apply)

i’m not a Sternie, but i transferred, and i’m also heavily involved with transfer students.

it’s not impossible to transfer, it’s just very, very hard.
