Transferring to Rice

Hello!

I applied to Rice as a sophomore for the fall of 2008. The wait to hear back from them is starting to wear me down. As I get increasingly antsy, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the Rice transfer process.

How much do your high school stats weigh on their decision?

What is the average GPA of transfers?

If you get in, is there housing available for you?

Is Rice helpful in allowing transfers to make a smooth transition? (is there an orientation for them etc)

Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

I was wondering some of the same things. What are the admissions statistics for transferring; how difficult is it? And what all does the transfer application require?

Yeah, I applied for sophomore transfer too, and I'm also wondering this same stuff.

literaturegirl, did you apply for fall 2008 as a transfer? Do y'all see "Application Under Review" on your status page? Mine's been like that for the past month...

If you are a transfer you will attend O-week, and get fully acclimatized to Rice. You should have oncampus housing for o-week, but I don't know about housing after that. There is a lot of housing near campus; if you can't get oncampus housing, the best thing to do is link up with another transfer student or two and look for a place near campus. Here's the print one: http://www.rice.edu/projects/lsc/WebPages/documents/OCG2007_internet.pdf and the online one: Rice Student Center

Rice tries to make some on-campus housing available for transfers, but it's not guaranteed. I suspect that this year will be particularly bad for transfers trying to get on-campus housing. As for making a smooth transition, anxiousmom was correct in pointing out that transfers are a part of O-week with incoming freshman, and generally seem to become incorporated into their college very well.

Thank you so much anxiousmom and Dorian_Mode

Dorian- Why do you think on-campus housing will be bad this year?

The O-Week coordinators do their best to get as many transfers as possible on-campus housing. There's all sorts of trading and bargaining throughout the summer. Transfer students participate in O-Week along with the rest of the new students, but there is special transfer student programming for them. The O-Week coordinators are working on making that even better this year. Also, advisors of transfer students do their best to make sure that transfer students feel as included as possible while still realizing that they already have a year or more of college under their belts, and the experience isn't as new to them.

As for how much high school grades vs. college GPA come into play, a lot of that has to do with what school you're transferring from.

I'm coming from a top 20 liberal arts college and im applying as a sophomore to Rice. how do you think high school grades vs college grades will weigh?

Yeah, and I'll be coming from Baylor's Honors Program. Does anyone happen to know how that'll look?

Schmoo: more students than usual have been forced to move off for the next school year, due to the gradual increase in the size of the student body. Supposedly this will work itself out with the opening of the new colleges, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a bit harder for transfers to find housing on campus next year.

I am under the same circumstance. On April 25, last Friday, I got an acceptance email. For some reason, my email client tossed it into my spam folder. Check you spam mail folders! Hopefully you will find something good! They said a hard-copy letter and all necessary materials were mailed to me that day. We should all be receving them shortly. =)

I got my acceptance package on Tuesday.. (or Monday I don't remember..)
I still check my status page everyday.. heh bad habit!

Grades before senior year weigh practically nothing on the transfer app. Personal testimony here.
