Transferring to SUNY New Paltz after one semester?

Hello, I’m currently enrolled in a private university only a few minutes from my house and I absolutely hate it. I don’t have any friends, my friends that stayed home for school as well stopped talking, I hate the school itself, and the freedom aspect is just awful. I want to leave as soon as possible. I just want a fresh start more than anything.

I went to my boyfriend’s school, Stony Brook (he stayed home as well), to watch him play in a video game tournament and I realized when I was there how badly I want to go away to school. Seeing people walking around the campus and hanging out at night and seeing the dorms, it all looked so amazing. I just wished I could go away and get the real college experience.

Here’s the catch, it’s only the first semester of school, I don’t know how transferring for the spring semester would work. I applied to New Paltz for the Fall 2017 semester, got accepted, I even enrolled for a few months. I switched out last second because I thought staying home was the better decision for me, clearly, I was wrong. So I just don’t know what to do. I don’t think I could stick this out for another year honestly, I absolutely despise it here. Please help me, thank you.

@tonianneran Call SUNY New Paltz and talk to the admissions department. Some colleges realize that some students will not like where they decided to attend and want to transfer. Being that you have already been accepted they may be able to offer you acceptance. But… this depends on the policy of each college or university. I know one school my S applied to said they would keep his app/acceptance open for two years just in case he changed his mind. You just never know until you ask. Maybe you can start in the spring? Who knows. Good luck!

Please know that you would no longer be eligible for merit scholarships, but if you qualify for the Excelsior it’d cover your tuition. You’d still need to come up with the costs of room&board and of course you need to be registered for 15+ credits and pass them all, whatever school you’re at.
Call Suny New Paltz and ask them about transferring for this Spring. Deadlines are likely fast approaching.
