I am currently a freshman Sport Management major at Xavier University and got a 3.8 in my first semester. I should get around a 3.2 second semester, which averages out to about a 3.5. I am hoping to transfer to the U, but I know it is obviously too late to apply to transfer for the fall semester of next year. I don't like it at Xavier very much, so I am looking to attend a california community college back home in San Diego in the meantime. If I maintained my 3.5 gpa what do you think my chances of getting into Miami are for either spring 2011 or fall 2011. Would it make a difference if I went to a community college opposed to staying at Xavier University? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt it would make a difference, I got into miami with a 3.67 first semester with around a 2.5 HS gpa. As long as you keep your gpa >3.5 I think you’ll be fine.

Try to explain the drop from 3.8 to 3.2 in an essay just to cover your bases.

A competitive gpa for UM as a transfer is a 3.4+

You should be fine. You do not need a 3.4+, I’d say a 3.2+ is competitive for UMiami for transfer. Though if you want scholarship, then I suggest you get a 3.75+, for transfers, you need a 3.75 GPA and like a 1400 SAT score.

Best of luck!

^ Well according to UM’s website that’s what it suggested as a competitive transfer applicant.

I thought that if you have 30 plus credit hours they dont look at your SAT score. And if I dont get a scholarship do they still offer decent need based financial aid packages?

Sorry man, I made an error. There are three kinds of scholarships for Miami transfers. One only evaluates your GPA, which is the 3.75+ and one of them takes into account if you’re a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Though, I think PTK is only for community-college students. Here is the link, [Transfer Academic Scholarships | Enrollment Management | University of Miami](http://www.miami.edu/index.php/ug/scholarships/transfer/)

And the website does list a “3.4 GPA” is competitive, but I know for a fact that many transfers get in with less credentials. I’d say a 3.5 GPA is a shoe-in, but you can get in with a 3.2+ if you shine in other areas.

my friend just got into Umiami as a transfer with pretty average (85-88) high school records and two years at a ny community college with a 3.6
I definitely think you have a good shot if you can write some good essays and fill out your application with some activities, good luck!

Thank you very much guys I really appreciate the help and feedback!

i’m wondering…
if my daughter was accepted by u of miami as a freshman, but she decided not to go there at that time
and now, after a year, she wants to transfer to u of miami
will the chance be lowered?

No, I don’t think it should affect her.

i want to go to the U so bad but my gpa is to low and im going to be a junior and i need to get all A’s junior year and 1st semester of senior year
