Transferring to Tulane

Hi! I'm sorry if I'm doing this wrong, but I'm new so please let me know if I am.

I'm a current freshman at Northwestern. I don't feel like it's a good fit, and I'm looking into transferring. Tulane is one of the schools I'm looking at. I applied to and was accepted to Tulane last year, as a senior, but didn't end up choosing it. (Perhaps unfortunately)

I did well in high school. Cumulative I think ended up being a 3.97 with plenty of AP's and everything. I was involved with orchestra and several science clubs and worked and did volunteer things.

At Northwestern, I did terribly my first quarter. I had a 2.85 GPA, I had 2 A-'s and 2 C's, all engineering classes. I know this would make it look like all I do is go out and never study, but I don't actually go out and I did study a lot. I joined a sorority (and hold leadership there), have joined a couple of clubs relating to engineering, I have a job, and I am taking part in a philanthropy fundraiser/event. I'm working extremely hard this quarter and when it ends in a few weeks I think/hope my cumulative will be above a 3.0.

Basically, my question is, should I even bother applying there? In high school I didn't really consider it a reach, but now getting admitted looks impossible. I'd appreciate flat honesty, it will be the most helpful. Thank you!

I think it is still worth your time and effort. Many students have trouble adjusting, and the improvement will show up as well. If you are not happy there, it makes the poorer grades first quarter even more understandable. Obviously you are a smart cookie and good student since you got into NU in the first place.

It is hard to say what your chances are of course. Transfer admissions are always hard to assess because it partly depends on freshman retention rates, which were very strong last year and probably will be strong this year also. But Tulane still usually takes a fair number, so go for it. Direct communication with the admissions counselor never hurts either!

Thanks for the quick reply and the advice! I’ll probably end up applying and seeing what happens…the worst I can get is a “no” and even that’s not the end of the world.
