Transferring to UCLA - Current Standing

I plan to apply to Universities this fall. UCLA being my top choice. I'm also gonna start my 3rd year in CC.

I'm really scared that I have screwed up my chances to getting into UCLA.

My GPA use to be a 3.56 and it now a 3.26. I had an awful semester fall 09 so that's why I waited to apply until this year. I'm a Psychology major. I'm done with the IGETC and I just need one more class that is required, but I'm still gonna be taking more classes so that I can bring my GPA up. I got a D in a math course (retook the class but got a C). I have a W in my transcripts, and 3 Cs. As for extracurriculars, I'm only part of the IDEAS club and I started doing some community service his summer at my local library. I might audition for this fall's musical and do that if I get a role.

Am I in bad shape? one more thing I got a C in a philosophy class (philosophy is a requirement for my major), and I plan to take another philosophy class to compensate for that C

so what do you think. Have I screwed my chances?

I forgot to mention that I'm doing Honors as well.(Taking honors classes and doing TAP)

These are the classes required for Psychology (B.A.)
General Psychology - B

Math (Calculus or Stats) - B in stats, not behavioral statistics.

Life Science (Biology) - B

Philosophy - C , will be taking another philosophy course to compensate for that C.

Chemistry or Physics - Have not taken that yet.

Hate to break it to you, but those stats won’t cut it for UCLA Psych. Competitively you you should be in the 3.5-3.7 range, usually with all pre-reqs completed with A/B’s…

TAP will definately help in that you can have a backup major choice on application, that is if they let you complete TAP with a low GPA- check out your school’s TAP requirements.

But upward trends are appreciated by admittance, so do well this next semester.

I think you’re all good if you can complete TAP. I went to UCLA with a 3.46 at time of transfer and I did TAP. TAP almost gets everyone in as long as you have above a 3.0 right?

I’m still gonna be at CC for a whole year (fall '10 and spring '11), but the thing is that my GPA won’t change till I finish this upcoming fall semester. By the end of next spring it will be that higher GPA from 3.5-3.8. The thing is that the application process is this November. So when I’m filling in the information I will still have a GPA of 3.26, and I’m worried that I’m only going to be reviewed based on the work that I have currently done, and not on the classes that will be in progress (fall '10) and the ones I will be taking in the future (spring '11)

How will they know that I’m still doing work to bring my GPA up.

Also, I will be retaking another philosophy class to compensate for that C and get the credit for the requirement with that higher grade. I can also take behavioral statistics and get an A and replace the B that I got in regular statistics with that A. I still have to take a chem or physics class (have no grade for that requirement)

one last thing, does anyone know if the budget cuts influence decision makings, and if it affects the chances of getting into the school?

they ask for a grade update in january. report all As to them for fall '10, and they’ll like that & take it into consideration.

still— they will hate that you got a B in lower div intro/general psych.

Unless you can get up to a 3.5 by the end of Fall '10 I would say your chances are slim to none.

Winter and Spring grades will not matter.

I don’t have a second major so I was thinking on putting sociology as my alternate major. I only need two more classes for that major which I can take this upcoming fall or next spring.

Careful, I recall sociology being an impacted major (though psych isn’t). TAP doesn’t let you choose an impacted as your alternate, so you might consider switching them around.

^^^^***** that’s not true,

psych is one of the most impacted majors at UCLA.
definitely put sociology if you can. get As in those classes, and then your chances will be better.

put 1. sociology and 2. psych

From what I hear, the W won’t be that big of a deal and since you have TAP, that might help some.

Since your grades aren’t so hot at this time, I suggest you focus on extracurriculars that focus more on your major. Show them that you’re really interested in your intended major.

Best of luck to you!
