Hi :) I'm at SMC trying to transfer by next year fall, and I will be submitting my UC application this November. I currently have a 3.8 GPA, planning to raise it back to a 3.9 by the end of summer. I am applying for a Global Studies major.

Unfortunately, I never applied into the Scholars Program so I will not be eligible for UCLA TAP. I could apply now, but I doubt I'll be able to get required scholars units in time anyways. How badly will this affect my application? UCLA is one of a couple backup schools, and I would love to know.

TAP only allows you to select a non-impacted alternate major really. They also say that they give you “priority”, but they never specify what they mean by that. Global Studies is very difficult to get into, I think they roughly cap the admissions for it. I would suggest International Studies instead. It’s still difficult to get into, but not as much as Global Studies. It’s basically the same major. If you have the grades, TAP won’t make a difference. If you have a 3.9 or close to it and will complete all of your pre-reqs by next Spring, I’d say it’s much more likely than not you will get into UCLA. At least for International Studies anyway.

tap helps but it is not necessary.

I applied to all my Uc’s without TAP or TAG and still got in with a 3.7 to the History Major at UCI,UCSB, nd UCLA. I honestly dont think Honors courses are worth the trouble, then again I go to PasadenaC.C. which is known to be a feeder school to UCLA so I think that helped. good luck!

Dude, that’s great! I personally have similar circumstances to yours and I’m happy for a fellow PCC student finding success =)
Here’s to hoping I get into UCLA as well, lol.

@xtony981: thanks. if you need any help with questions about transfering to UCLA just PM me…btw, when do you plan to apply?

TAP students have extremely high acceptance rates, it makes it seem like it is a necessity, but in reality it is not. TAP has such high admission rates because TAP students are the type that would usually get in anyway.

I’ve heard that it only really helps in borderline situations.

almalex5 is right. The real benefit of TAP is being to select a non-impacted alternate major.

thanks LAforlife, almalex5 and everyone else;!

Hey PCC students - I am a former Lancer, now a Senior at UCLA in the Global Studies dept. PM me if you want details about the issues with GS as an incoming transfer.

Oh, and IDS is most definitely NOT the same degree as GS. For one thing, as an IDS major you don’t have to write a senior thesis in order to graduate!

TAP gives you “extra points” in the admission evaluation. You are something like twice as likely to be admitted if you are in TAP as a regular applicant. UCLA is actually more “academic index” oriented for transfer admission than holistic, despite what the campus advertises.

Global Studies is getting pretty competitive, with admit rates in 2011 at about 27%.
