So i recently started my first quarter at cal poly pomona. I wanted to go to ucsb and got rejected didn't do too well on my sat's 1200's or so. got a almost perfect score on my spanish for SATII's and 350 or so on my math.

I dont really like the environment here at cal poly and would like to go to UCSB ASAP. Now my question is how soon am I able to do that? i'm really going into depression out here. I'm taking remedial courses for math and english and am almost done with those and taking an econ class also. I would really appeciate any input i can get on this.

The UC's only accept two year transfers so I think you need the equivalent of two years of classes. If you hate it there, try attending Santa Barbara City college. They have dorms and a transfer program to UCSB. Or, move home and attend your local CC until you have the number of necessary transfer units. Don't stay where you are miserable. Good luck.

Yeah I agree with bessie. Being miserable does you no good in college.

What is it that you are depressed about? I'm concerned because a friend of mine is strongly considering Cal Poly as his first choice, and if there is some terrible aspect about the school I don't know, it'd be nice if I could tell him about it.

well its just a big commuter school so its not much fun ...Maybe its because I have night classes but when I do go in the daytime it still seems to be somewhat boring. The spirit that i've seen at lets say santa barbara isn't there. I have 12 units that are transferable from passing Spanish AP is that somewhat of a help towards transferring to SB?

yes, the AP will help you get there a bit quicker... But more realistically it's not a quarter's worth of classes, so what it will help you do is take a bit lighter load before you go. I think it will take 2 years to get there.

I had posted an article back around the time admission decisions came out in the UCSB forum about the "backdoor" into UCSB. Basically it's what bessie says. Go to SBCC and you can live in a dorm in Isla Vista right where the UCSB students live so that you take full part in the campus life. They even have a program that lets you take a class each semester at UCSB. And you can enroll in the guaranteed transfer option so you know you'll get into `SB. Actually the guarantee is available from most California CC's. You should check into how much time you need to spend at a CC to do this, but you may be able to qualify if you spend next year at one (why not SBCC?)

consider yourself lucky, leo. many seniors at cal poly pomona wish they had made the decision you did and got stuck with too many hours, miserable like you. it once was a much better place but sadly other schools have zoomed ahead and left pomona in the dust.

the CC plan is a very smart play. every UC has some kind of articulation agreement with at least one nearby CC, and at many of them you get a very good education, too. for a ridiculously low cost.

JP_O - there are two Cal Polys - San Luis Obispo (near Santa Barbara) and Pomona. Leo805 is talking about CP Pomona. The two are very different, so if your friend is considering CP SLO it's a different situation from CP Pomona.
