I am thinking about transferring to UF as an engineering major. I am currently an AA major at an in-state community college and at the very earliest I can complete all of the engineering prerequisites by the end of 2014. I would like to transfer to UF in the Fall of 2014 not the spring of 2015. Can I transfer to UF as a junior and start taking classes in the fall even though I won't be able to get into the engineering program until spring 2015? I want to transfer in the fall because it will speed up the whole process of my degree and allow me to have the summers off for internships, but still remain on a good schedule. Too many of the courses are in sequence of one another and some aren't available in the summer, so transferring in the spring would be a very inconvenient setback.

In my experience, you’re either in your major when you come in as a Junior transfer, or you’re not accepted. The university refers all applications to the appropriate college, and the college has to admit you. If you don’t have the prereqs done before your scheduled starting semester, your application will be rejected. You may be able to get into mechanical engineering with only 6 out of 8 pre-reqs done (check the catalog), but if you still have more than 2 to go before your starting semester, you’ll probably be denied.

I agree with @GatorNuke82, either you’re accepted into the major or you aren’t accepted at all, because UF can’t just have Juniors in a limbo state. One of the things that I often state to students who ask for my opinion on getting an AA and then transferring is that they must lay out the classes they need to take and match them up with the offered course schedules. Otherwise, you may find yourself being so close to getting an AA and yet there is a pre.req. that can’t be taken until you finish the previous one.

Thanks for the replies. I have read the admission requirements and remember that it did say 6 out of 8 was acceptable. I am hoping that they will make an exception for 5 out of 8 because of my situation. I will talk to an Academic Advisor soon, but I thought I would ask here first just to see if anyone has had a similar experience.

I’m planning on doing the same thing except from an in-state university. I want to transfer to college of engineering for computer science and for that, there are 7 requirements out of which 6 are required. I can fulfill only 5 requirements by the end of next year’s summer semester and I don’t want to waste the entire fall semester for that one requirement.
I hope they’re lenient when it comes to these pre-reqs!
