I am Senior who will be attending a ccc after high school graduation in order to transfer to a 4 year. I am primarily looking at to transfer to USC, UCLA , UCB, or UCD for econ or business. I've had my sights on USC as potential transfer destination for awhile and I recently discovered that they accept sophomore transfers however if you don't complete 30 credits by the time you submit your application they base their deliberations upon high school and SAT/ACT scores

.....Well I didn't quite take high school seriously and worked way under my potential my junior year so my transcript looks kinda of scary. Also I didn't take take the SAT due to that fact that I figured I wouldn't need since I would be attending a cc. I plan to work hard and overload on course work this summer and Fall in order to get 30 credits by the time I submit application. I did take some AP exams in High School ( us history, eng 3 comp <- passed both with 4s and I plan on taking ap gov this year so that might add to my credits) I know my grades are going to have to be stellar (between 3.7-4 to be competitive)

Do you guys have any advice/tips on preparing to transfer to USC as a sophomore? For instance; whether I should take the SATs at some point before submitting applications, how difficult it is to transfer as a sophomore, whether its advisable to transfer early, whether I need to finish all my GEs before transferring as a sophomore, whether EC's both recent and High school are important on an application ore anything in general that would help me during my transfer process that would give me a good edge during deliberations. Thanks!

Personally I wouldn’t advise transferring early i.e. as a sophomore. As someone who has gone to both a 4 yr and a CC I personally think the cost is crazy expensive. I can’t speak about USC in general but the 4 year I am going to, in terms of GE classes, isn’t any better than Santa Monica College. In essence you are basically playing for the social life of the school.

If you apply as a junior it’s much easier to get into. 1st because you don’t need to take a bunch of GE prep courses. 2nd because you can beef up your transcript (e.g. take calc 2 or 3).

I applied to USC my first year at community college, I got in, but didn’t accept. For transfer after one year, you need to complete their pre-reqs, which is like four classes. You need a 4.0 because their business department is highly competitive, and you need to join the clubs, etc. High school grades don’t seem to matter because they overlooked my 3.0, but I had 2200+ SAT score. I think with 2000+ SAT score, 4.0 gpa in college, go join honor/clubs you will get in. If you want to transfer as a junior, you can only get 1 B max(3.95 gpa) to get in safely, unless you have other outstanding credentials.

@SentinelBear, sorry when you mean the pre-reqs, do you mean like Calc and Writ 140, or the GE reqs? I sent off my application and I’ve only fulfilled one GE. I’ve done both Acct 1 & 2 though.

I think I’m in a similar spot as you were: low high school GPA, decent SAT, current 4.0, club leader, applied to transfer as a Sophomore. Did you get a Spring Grade Request or get straight in?
