transferring to USC

I am a student a technical college in Myrtle Beach and I will be getting my Associates this coming May. I'm hoping to transfer to USC Columbia and I am hoping to be able to start summer classes if I get in. I was wondering if anyone else is transferring as well and do you know when I should receive my acceptance letter if I get in? It took a couple of months for them to receive my transcripts but as of this past Thursday, they have received all of my credentials. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

yea i applied to transfer as well and I just received something in the mail asking for my SAT Scores. My app had been complete for atleast a month at this point, so it looks like a lot more waiting left for me.

I don’t know anything about transferring to USC, but if you guys could keep this site updated on the process, I’m sure it’d be really helpful.

I have a friend who is an SC resident, but she’s planning on transferring from a school out-of-state, and the process is about as clear as mud to her.

Does anyone know if you can find out before July or August if you’re accepted into USC? It’s so late that if she doesn’t get in, she’ll probably end up having to take a semester off of college, which isn’t something she really wants to do.

The USC website has plenty of information available about applying as a freshman but not much at all about transfers. I applied for the Summer I term and the applications are not due until May 1, so I don’t know if I will hear anything back until they receive all applications. I’m hoping that they accept applications on a rolling basis so they will just review applications as they are submitted, but I am not sure if this is how they do it. I’ve tried calling to talk to someone but I keep getting put on hold. If I don’t get accepted then I guess I will have to take a semester off as well which is definitely not what I want to do. If I find anything out, then I will keep this thread updated to help whoever needs it in the future!

^Yeah.

USC really should put out more information regarding transfer students. There seems to be plenty of information for freshmen and you can find almost any answer online, but for transfers, they mostly focus on students coming from branch campuses or tech schools and not on students transferring from other four year colleges.

And if I find out anything through my friend, then I will post here as well. It could be useful for future students. :)

Are technical colleges the equivalent of community colleges? My son is a current freshman and was thinking about taking a core class this summer at a local community college, but couldn’t find anything on the website regarding transferring credits from an out-of-state community college. He’s not sure who to even call to find out what would transfer. His adviser suggested he take it, but even she didn’t know how to go about verifying the class would transfer.

Technical colleges are simkilar to community colleges. Our local community college was called a technial college until just a few years ago.

My son didn’t have any transfer issues because there is actually a SC law that requires state supported colleges to transfer a particular list of classes, so my son is just going to take classes from that list this summer.

I realize that you are talking out of state, so I would get a copy of the course descriptions and sylabus if possible for the classes he wants to take at community college, and gather the same info for the usc class, and go back to his advisor with that info. I was told that it is up to the advisor if the classes are similar enough. If his advisor isn’t sure about it at least he has something to go to his boss with.

Advisors are pretty hopeless in helpfulness in some cases.

I would advise that your son go in and talk to the Registrar’s Office. They might be able to give more insight.

If it’s from a regionally accredited college, they should accept transfer credit, but it might officially only just count as 3 hours for Unknown Course 001 if you don’t ask for it to specifically transfer a certain way. That’s what happened for me with one of my dual-enrollment classes from a private college here in SC.

Okay, thanks so much for the advice. I’ll let him know all of this.
