I was considering transferring to WPI and was hoping for advice. I am starting community college in a month. I would like to major in Computer Science/Engineering or robotics and minor in Japanese. Is WPI a school where it is beneficial to transfer to (not a lot of gaps, missed material like internships that make WPI great, etc.)? Will it be worth the debt? I am just starting to look at it so any information would be helpful.

To get Japanese studies and engineering at one school, you will need to look at larger universities such Boston University, Northeastern, etc., but not all of those offer degrees or even concentrations in robotics. Carnegie Mellon would have both, but it is really hard to get into, I have no idea about transferring there.
WPI only offers Spanish and German as language options.

Hopefully you have an advising office at your current school that can help you?

I go to a community college in Washington so the best school the advising office knows about would be the University of Washington which although is an amazing school and I would love to go there, I don’t think it is the right fit for me. How do you think the UW’s undergraduate CSE program ranks nationally? I have looked online but those reviews can be biased or based on things that I am not interested in. I might change my mind about that in the future though as I mature.

I am not particularly worried about a specific degree in robotics although it would be nice. I figure a degree in CSE, a few classes in EE, ME, physics, etc., and an internship should put me in a fairly good condition to work in robotics.

How are the transfer programs at the schools you mentioned? I know that Carnegie Mellon is amazing and therefore it’s transfer admissions are near impossible but I haven’t heard much about BU or Northeastern.

I think that I can take classes at Clark College but they only offer the first two years which I will have hopefully completed by the time I transfer. Any recommendations?

What would you recommend doing in preparation for transferring into these colleges, especially in relation to robotics and CSE. I don’t know of any local robotics groups and I don’t have the money nor expertise to build entire robots by myself.

I’d start by looking at the requirements for the RBE (robotics) major. For example you need 7 math courses - like Calc I, II, III, and IV. Two Physics classes, a CS class, and humanities credits. See if what you are taking in Community College will transfer as well as count toward degree requirements.

WPI works on a term system. So, 1/3 a credit is equal to one class (typically 3 credits) at other colleges.
