Transferring to Yale

Yale is my dream school and I unfortunately was not accepted into the class of 2017. Although this was heartbreaking for me, I am still determined to end up at Yale.

I have three choices for school next year: The Carroll School of Management at Boston College, The Gabelli School of Business at Fordham University, or direct admit into the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

I realize that the most important factors in my attempt to transfer will be my college GPA and the quality of my essays, but which school will have the highest likelihood to potentially strengthening my application?

You’re thinking about this all wrong. Choose the school that feels most like home and provides you with the best financial aid. The college you attend does not matter as much as your reasons for wanting to transfer. Successful transfer applicants are able to articulate what resources and academic programs Yale can provide them with that their current college cannot.

“As competitive as the admissions process is for freshmen, the transfer process is even more so. Yale receives more than 1,000 transfer applications each year, and we have spaces for only 20 to 30 students. While GPA is not the only factor that the admissions committee takes into consideration, it may be helpful to note that the average college GPA of admitted transfer candidates is 3.8. Given the competitive nature of the transfer admissions process, candidates should have compelling reasons for attending Yale and should think carefully about whether Yale is the right fit for them before making the effort to complete an application.”

I am a transfer applicant for the Fall 2013 semester. I have done a lot of research about transferring to Yale.

The bottom line is that Yale is even more selective when it comes to transfers. They have a sentence on their website that says applicants are highly recommended to have 3.8+ GPAs. With the 2-3% acceptance rate, even stellar students with 4.0 GPAs and extensive involvement in extracurriculars may not be accepted.

My advice would be to choose a school that you will love. You shouldn’t choose a school because it will give you a better chance to transfer into Yale, because in reality, no such school exists. If you still want to transfer after your first semester, go for it, but do not go to college with a mindset of transferring to Yale.

Hope this helped.

I think it would be healthier to say, “Well, maybe for graduate school.”

Transfer applicant too. I have an UW 4.0 College GPA, but I don’t think that’s enough. Let us know how it turns out, @OMGItsJustin :)
