Transferring to Yale

I am currently a high school junior, and I obviously haven't applied to college yet, but I'm probably going to end up at Penn or Columbia (my school is really tight with them, and I have really good grades, so I do have a fair chance of getting in). I can't apply to Yale right off the bat because they hate my school with passion (something about AP's) and they take pretty much no one from my school. Harvard and Princeton together took about 7 kids, but Yale never really takes anyone.

Issue? It has been my dream to go to Yale since as long as I can remember. I want to major in English or something along those lines (creative writing/comp. lit/psychology/philosophy/etc.)

I was thinking about starting at Columbia or Penn and then transferring into Yale for my sophomore year (if I got in) because I know that it is like the perfect match for me. Is it worth it to do that? Or do you think I'll fall in love with whatever school I end up going to?

Do you know of any other good colleges besides Yale that have killer English programs? What about liberal arts? I'll be fine if I go to a school that has a good English and/or Creative Writing program... I'm not going to post my stats because I think it's stupid, but I will say that I have a good average, I'm a good test taker (I haven't taken the SAT's yet, but in 8th grade, I got a 1400 out of 1600 on a practice test. I've learned a lot more math now, so I'll definitely do better. I'm much more of an english person, though), and I have a ton of after school stuff.

So. Do you know of any good schools with what I'm looking for? Oh, and I don't drink or do drugs, so I'd prefer not to go to a school with a lot of that, though I guess you choose your friends so it's okay. Or do you think it's just easier/better to go to Columbia/Penn and then transfer to Yale?

59 views, and no one has any advice???

I think we all might be just a tad put off by your arrogance. As the Li case demonstrates, even having a 2400, top 1% of class rank, and 2390/2400 on SATIIs sometimes is not enough for Penn/other top schools. ADVICE: Worry about doing your best in your Junior year and focus on your first year applications. Good luck!

Columbia or Penn, and no drinking or drugs? Columbia is in NYC for god's sake, and Penn is known as the party Ivy (that's not just a stereotype--people love it for its social life)...You need to start rethinking your college list...or start thinking about it in the first place since you haven't given it much thought!

Are you male or female? For girls, Wellesley has a great English department

I suggest you do some research before formulating detailed long-term plans like "transfer to Yale." Just for your information, transferring to Yale and similar places is next to impossible.

Unless you go to Bob Jones University, it's gonna be a bit hard to not find some alcohal at any college. You don't have to drink, but there sure as hell is going to be a lot of people around you drinking. Yale by the way has plenty of it.

You will be going up against a lower acceptance rate as a transfer (3% last year) than you would by applying as a freshman (9% I think?). Focus on getting into Columbia or Penn first...if you're fortunate enough to get into one of those schools, you'll have a good shot at Yale.

Yale is next to impossible to transfer into. Even if you get into Columbia and try to transfer, it'll be difficult, and that would be the best scenario. By the way, Columbia's freshman acceptance rate is continuing to decline (believe it was 9% last year) and will likely hit a new low this year. I wouldn't be too positive about your chances - even if you're a 'perfect' student.

I've been thinking about it, and since that post (but not because of that post), my plan has changed.

I've become really interested in Wellesley and Swarthmore. I feel like I might take the liberal arts path, because I feel like it suits me more. Yale would be ideal, but I doubt I'll get in, and I heard it's snobby anyway.

I don't really have a list yet, but I think I'm going to end up applying to:
Columbia
Wellesley
Swarthmore
UPenn
Williams (If I like it when I visit)

Something like that. Do any of you know anything about Wellesley? How does it compare to the non LAC colleges reputation-wise and academically? What are the people like there? Thanks!

If believing that makes you feel better, then that is okay.

However, there is always going to be a degree of "snobbiness" at top schools, no matter where you go.

Yeah, it actually does make me feel better. I'm trying to widen my list of schools, and since I know that there is no way Yale can be on it, I have to come up with something to kind of ease it out.

It's fine.

that sometimes you speak of is VERY rare. Generally, students who score high on the SATs have good grades, and at least some ECs. And i have seen that with good scores, you are pretty much guranteed at one of the ivies or similar schools. Score is everything! i have seen it done MANY times, in real life and on CC.
School's care A LOT about scores. And they should, because how else can you convince to them that you are worthy ;)

i think having good scores is probably more indicative of other things that schools like, but there is no easy way to support that so i'll leave it at that. about the Li case, he did get into Yale.

My scores will probably be good enough to get into Yale, but my grades aren't. And my school has really bad relations with Yale.

why would you not apply just because of the high school you go to? if you want to go somewhere, the only way to get in is to apply. this is just a really dumb thread, you shouldnt be thinking about transferring at least until you dont get into your top 7 schools like what happened to me, until then focus on freshman admissions

Newbyreborn, I REALLY want to go to Yale...and your post made me feel 100 times better because I have perfect test scores...and while my ECs are pretty good, they aren't A-FREAKING-MAZING like some people's are...doing loads of science research and publishing stuff...being really really good at an instrument...going to TASP...

OMG sometimes i wish i had problems like that when i went to high schoool.

You belive that you will not get into yale because of your schools repuation with yale?

So because of that you plan on not even applying?

So when they see that you went to XYZ high school they will automatically reject you ?

Why dont you just apply ?........ there are many many other reasons that a school has for not accepting someone than " we dont like their high school"

It's not that. I go to a Jewish school that doesn't let you take AP's till senior year. Because I'm advanced in math and history, I'm taking AP Stat this year and APUSH, but that's still not enough to get me into Yale because they think my school is weird for that. Senior year, I'll probably take AP Calc BC, AP English, AP Euro, AP Physics, and an extra english. Oh, plus art and like 4 other Judaic subjects. That's not enough for Yale. I could technically do stuff on my own, but I go to school from 8-5 straight, and I have no frees, and I do a ton of EC's, so I don't know when I'd have the time to do it...

Secondly, I have areas that I'm really strong in, and areas that I'm not as strong in. I'm not all-around. Not to toot my own horn, but I'm a really good writer (professional writers have told me so, teachers have, parents, friends, etc.) and I'm good at English (like good enough for Yale, I hope/think), and I'm two years ahead in Math and I'm good at it. I could skip another year if I had to.

I'm not good at French, though. I'm in honors, but I'm getting in the B range. I also wasn't in honors for chem or bio, but I'm in accelerated for Physics. I might move up because I'm getting an A and putting in no work.

I don't have a 4.0, though. I do go to a very demanding school (it is one of the top 100 public/private schools in America) so that might be okay, but I don't want to waste my early decision card on Yale because I know that it would take me a very long time to recover from rejection.

There have been kids with straight A's that have applied and been rejected from my school. We get more kids into Harvard and more kids into Princeton than we do into Yale. Like, nobody gets into Yale. I love English, and that's what I would do if I went, but I feel like they wouldn't care if that was my strength. It seems like they're only looking for all-around geniuses. I could write a book... and then see what happens, but I don't want to do that until I feel that I'm ready. I only write shorter works right now.

So that's my issue. I'm afraid to apply because it would mean so much if I got rejected.

Since Harvard and Princeton no longer do EA/ED, there should be no trouble in applying ED to Yale.

What do you mean? How would that make a difference?

you aren't really wasting the ED if the schools you would otherwise use it on don't even have EA/ED. correct me if i'm wrong.

I don't want to go to Harvard or Princeton, so I probably won't even apply there. I'd be wasting it on Yale instead of using it on Penn (which adores ED) or Columbia or some other school I'd like. I want closure ASAP. I'd like to know where I'm going to college by dec. 15, if possible...
