I am currently a freshman at a private university. I am struggling academically and socially (the people here have an elitist attitude). If I finish my freshman year, can I go to community college or a small college near my home for my sophomore year, and still be able to transfer to a decent state school the following year? Do colleges look down upon people who transfer twice and/or attend community college after leaving their first university?

Yes you can transfer twice. Scads of people do this every year. Just remember that you have to keep your grades up so that you have the best options.

If your goal is to finish up at one of your home-state Us, completing your A.A. or A.S. at a local community college is probably the best plan. Get in touch with the transfer counselor at that college and ask about the best way to achieve your goals.
