I just finish applying as a transfer student to another university for the spring semester, but I am not sure if I am going to be accepted yet or not. I wanted to know if I should change something with my fasfa as of now or when I get accepted? I feel like I should do something right now even though I don't know if I will get in or not, just to make sure my financial aid will transfer if I do get accepted. (I want to transfer to this university after finishing my fall semester at my current university)

* just to make sure my financial aid will transfer if I do get accepted. *

What aid did you get? If you got aid that has to do with your current university then you won’t get that aid at your new school.

If you got Pell or a Stafford loan at your current school then you’ll get it at your new school. But, if you got work-study, a Perkins loan, or any institutional aid, then you may lose that.

Transfers often get lousy aid. What aid did your current school give you?

Does the school have separate transfer admissions pages on their website? If not, email the FA office at your intended new school to ask when they would need to receive your FAFSA data. If they don’t respond, just update and resubmit the FAFSA anyway so they can package you if you’re accepted…it won’t affect your current school if you don’t transfer, so you have nothing to lose.

Don’t cut your ties with your current school until you’ve seen and understood the FA package at your new school. Your new school may not be able to give you much aid.

As of now, I have received a pell grant and a texas renewal grant + some direct loans from my current school.

thank ya’ll for all the advice so far, I really appreciate it

You can add another school code to your FAFSA at any time. The school will receive it quickly, but it may take awhile before it is processed. I used to work in financial aid at a large public U, and we did not process spring aid until December. The reason for this was to make sure loan amounts were correct. You would be eligible for Pell at the new school, and you would be eligible for student loans in the amount of the remaining annual limit for your year in school at your new school (so if you were a sophomore at the old school but still classified as a freshman at the new school, and if you used half of a $6500 loan award in fall, you would only be eligible for $5500-3250=2250 at the new school). I don’t know about the Texas grant …

Did you get awarded a Perkins loan? If so, your new school may not be able to offer you that for spring semester…those seem to be more limited.
