Transferring vs Applying?

I'm currently a college freshman, and I'm debating whether I should transfer or apply as a freshman to some better schools (i.e.Ivies).

I know transferring has lower acceptance rates, so would I be better off applying as a freshman or working to get a good GPA to transfer?
(My high school GPA was 3.9, SAT 1970, so it might be a bit of reach).

Also, is it possible to apply as freshman and also transfer student simultaneously (I mean both to the same school and not to the same school)?

pretty sure you are considered a transfer student once you start college, so I don’t think you have a choice. I could be wrong but thats usually how it works. And why would you want to toss away a semesters worth of grades anyways?

Generally, if you’ve had “some college” post high school graduation you will be considered a transfer. You cannot relinquish credits to change your status either.

To improve your chances as a transfer you can retake the SAT, but of course the colleges can see the date you took it.

Good luck!

If I transfer next year, do I have to transfer in as a sophmore? Or can I transfer in as a freshman?

You would be transferring as a sophomore.

How colleges define a transfer student varies widely. For instance, for GWU, taking one college course post HS makes you a transfer. However, for Y, if you’ve completed less than a year of college, you’re still considered a fr applicant. You need to check each individual school.

your standing usually is up to the discretion of the adcoms unless it specifically asks on the app and says “what would u like to be considered as”

If I defer my current enrollment, could I apply for regular admissions to other schools?
