I'm currently a sophomore at a private university. I came in with a 2.8 gpa from a community college. I'm hoping to transfer out to Humboldt State, but I haven't completed the IGETC. I'm missing foreign language and I think I need another semester of math. Would it be a waste of time to apply without completing IGETC requirements? I'm a philosophy major, if that helps.

Yes, it would be a waste of time. Without completing the IGETC schools cannot guarantee that you will graduate in the average allotted time. You must complete 2 years of a foreign language and at least one college level math course is a must for transfers.

Why do you want to go to such a rubbish school?

Imagine: community colleges give you priority into UCSD, UCLA and Berkeley, but no–you want to go to Humboldt.

All right.

I think for most majors, IGETC is a must for transfer. But I hope it won’t apply to some of the science majors. Because I’m an engineering major. Now I’m applying for fall 2011. I don’t think I can finish IGETC by next spring. So I will be transferring without it. I actually have most of the GE classes done, but no foreign languages. And I think I’m missing biological science class as well maybe. People kept on saying IGETC is not required for engineering major applicants, is it so???

I’m applying to Humboldt because it’s small, and I don’t have the grades for the bigger UCs with sweet reputations.

gattaca88- unless you have personally spoken with an admissions officer, the same rule applies to everyone: you MUST complete IGETC before transfer.
A foreign language is required to complete IGETC.

I am a current UCB PoliSci major.

KelliC03 is right, IGETC is a must. But I am pretty sure that if you have completed two years of foreign language in high school, then that should cover the foreign language section for IGETC

^ you two are wrong. Engineering has so many pre-reqs they recommend you don’t complete IGETC and finish your pre-reqs. You just need to have the 2 english classes, 1 math class and 4 science classes (no problem for engineering majors) to complete basic UC eligibility.

From Mechanical Engineering at UCB from assist.org

“The College of Engineering does not recognize the Intersegmental General
Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) and strongly discourages students from
following this option due to the number of major-specific technical courses
required for engineering transfer admission.”

Also, IGETC completion is not a requirement for UCLA. I’m not sure about other schools.

@UChopeful1234: No, it may not be a “requirement,” but you’re “not going to be accepted” if you “don’t complete IGETC.”

The only exception, as UCeric2010 noted, is that specific programs and specific campuses recommend completion of the major requirements over IGETC. This is usually due to a heavy course load that would otherwise not be fulfilled through IGETC, but in an ideal world, you -would- have IGETC completed even for these programs.

Unless the program requirements explicitly say otherwise, it’s not something you can just ignore and then hope to actually be accepted.

technically, i got in w/o IGETC. I was just following the general pattern of igetc but didn’t submit an igetc certification. Then LA asked me if i completed igetc cuz or else i would have to do LA’s ge requirements. I double checked and i had igetc so i just requested certification last week. You don’t HAVE to have igetc but i’m pretty sure its highly recommended

The nastiness is not appreciated.

You may not like a particular school but comment such as yours show your immaturity at being able to examine what a school may have to offer. Perhaps you know someone who had an unpleasant experience at HSU but that in fact is not what happens with all students. My own son graduated from there, got a very good education and a job in his field upon graduation. His work reviews have been in the superior category. Much of what he uses on the job he can attribute to classes at HSU. He has come in contact with graduates from the UCs (Davis and Cal) who were sadly lacking in the experience he received. You may not like a particular school, but you should be more specific in your criticisms.

ps: I’m a senior member; I have bigger muscles than you.

What? Many people get accepted without having competed IGETC. The only downside is that you must complete UCLA’s GE requirements. However, it does not affect your admission decision (i.e. you will not be rejected because you have not competed IGETC).

Heh, well, that’s just not true. Any admissions counselor will tell you otherwise. Completing IGETC is “highly recommended” for a reason.

yo uncool dude, you don’t need a foreign language or IGETC for Humboldt State. You just have to complete the Golden 4 with a C or above…English 1, Speech 1, Stats, and a critical thinking class. Even a ‘D’ is acceptable and transferable to a CSU but not for certification or a degree. If you decide to get CSU GE certified you will need Poli Sci 1 - American Institutions and at least 1 US History instead of 1 year of a foreign language. The primary benefit of CSU/GE or IGETC certification is the college you enter in as a junior cannot force you to take anymore lower division GE classes. Granted you should have at least 2-3 major prereq’s and 60 semester/90 quarter units completed if you want priority.
