So I’m coming from a communty college in Florida and I had above average grades in high school, perfect test scores but I fucked up in college. I played soccer for the school and lost a hold of my grades and my gpa is now right underneath a 2.5. I am trying to bring my gpa up and I got denied from UP but accepted into altoona. I got in for summer 2017. I am visiting in about one week and I am visiting altoona and UP. I’m super bummed about up but the admissions counselor told me it was only because of my GPA. I’ll be a junior by the time fall 2017 comes around so I dont know if it will be worth it going to altoona for the summer. I am goig to talk to the advisor when I visit to see if I’d be able to transfer to UP after getting 60+ credits for fall term and just take 6 classes over the summer but I am also waiing for a decision from rutgers NB which also interests me. But if I got into UP i’d choose that with no hesitation.
Just wanted any advice or feedback about what you would do and if you have any experience at either. How’s the parties? Greek life? I wanted to rush if I got into UP because i DEF wont be able to rush my senior year. Also would transferring to altoona as a junior be stupid?
Altoona is a 4 year college so no, transferring to Altoona junior year in and of itself isn’t stupid. However, for the cost, I’m not sure a commonwealth campus for an OOS student if that’s not what you want is worth it. Many students at Altoona are going to main campus for their junior year. It sounds like you’ve already been told that is not an option.
Altoona is a pretty campus, but small. Only 4,000 students. Nothing like UP campus. BUT it is very close to UP campus so students are often able to be involved at both.
I just realized you said you only have 32 credits. PSU UP only takes transfers as Freshmen or as Juniors and Seniors. No Sophomore transfers. So that may be why you were denied. I know others who have had to go to a commonwealth campus for a year and then transfer. You should really double check with an advisor and see when/if you will be able to go to UP campus once you are considered junior status.
My fault! Idk why I put 32…after this spring semester I will have 47 credits and I got admitted into Altoona summer session so I’m trying to finish my 60 credits over the summer at altoona. But yeah I totally agree with you about checking with an advisor…I’m visiting both campuses next Thursday and will forsure see if I’ll be able to transfer for fall term, if I have to stay for both fall and spring semesters of 2017-2018 school year I don’t think it’d be worth it.
Also, how are is the housing in altoona? And the party scene? Do they match roommates for you for off campus housing?
Altoona is about an hour from State College, just to give you a reference point. The Altoona campus is on one end of Altoona, and it’s a lovely campus but small.
No one will be rushing Greek at UP until the spring on next year, at the earliest, if at all. The Greek system at UP is undergoing a scrutiny that will likely change it profoundly in the next few years.
I can’t imagine going to PSU from Florida. It makes no sense financially UP is full and very very very few alterations to decisions will be made at this point.
Rutgers is also a far away choice – what is your intended major, and why these schools? New Brunswick has a more urban feel as is closer to major cities, etc. State College is great – but it is, in truth, in the middle of nowhere.
I’ve just been in FL my whole life and really need a change. PSU UP would have been a dream come true but Rutgers NB is like you said urban and I’d probably love that as well.
