Transferring...with a 1.8 GPA?!

Hey everyone! I'm interested in transferring to CMU (probably for the next spring semester), but I currently have a 1.8 GPA. What are my chances?

Here's the real story: I graduated from high school with a 3.7 and somehow managed to pass my first semester with a 3.2. During second semester I was heavily depressed and dealing with several mental illnesses. I basically stayed in bed all day and emo-ed it up. Not a good time in my life. I can get a doctor's note about it. So, I ended up with a 1.8 GPA.

I applied to CMU in high school and got waitlisted, but decided to go to UVM because I got some GREAT financial aid. I know I can probably go back to school to TRY to make my GPA higher, but I feel like I should take at least a semester's break to get everything back together. I'm doing a lot of things related to mental health and I've started my own business. I hope to major in either Biology, Computer Sciences, or Fine Arts (aren't those 3 different colleges? ha!)

Basically I want to know if I should give it a try. I know their admissions process is holistic, but let's be honest. CMU is a badass school that only accepts badasses, and a 1.8 is not badass. Is there even a tiny peep of a chance?

go for it, you’ll never kno if you don’t try
remember to show off ur potential

Despite the extenuating circumstances, I’m afraid your chances don’t look good. CMU’s computer science and fine arts majors in particular are known for being highly selective.

In any case, now that you are better, you should definitely go back to the school you are currently attending and raise your GPA first.

Holy hell. Get/stay on the appropriate meds, raise your GPA to something better than an effing D+ average, grow your business, and then apply for transfer. Majors like CS and Bio are very grades driven, because it requires hard work, and good grades = hard worker, so they like good grades. Even if your final GPA isn’t totally great (though still way better than a 1.8) they’ll look at the upward trend and tale of redemption, and that should be far more attractive than ‘boo hoo I had issues and stayed in bed all day it’s not my fault my grades suck so bad’.

Also, why is fine arts thrown in with bio and CS? CMU’s art program is very serious and very selective, so unless you’re already a phenomenal artist with an epic portfolio, good luck getting them to take you seriously.
