I messed my first semester at my CC up really bad (no d's or f's) and it took me about a year to bring it back up. I had a 2.6 my first semester and I've kept my gpa above a 3.0 for most of my semesters following it. This summer was rough for me (my sister had surgery) and my gpa fell back down to a 2.889. I want to go to UC Davis (my heart is set on it) and I have 15 units this fall semester. I've talked to a Davis rep and she told me that they look at the gpa AFTER fall grades are in. Can someone enlighten me on this? Does this have something to do with the fall update? Also, I'm applying as a Sociology major. Is this as competitive as other majors or is this easier to get into? If not, I'm applying as a managerial econ major, which seems easier to get into. I have a feeling my gpa will come up to a 3.0-3.2 after this fall semester (calculated it) and I'm working really hard. Can someone help me out? I'm a 17 year old transfer student applying this fall. Thanks.

BTW my pre-req gpa for my major is a 3.8.

well you’re overall is what matters here.

you aren’t eligible for TAG, and your major is socio, however your pre-req GPA is high. its sociology pal, i am sure you will be fine, I’m saying 65/35 maybe even 70/30. Just write a strong personal statement essay, try to meet with a Davis Rep to get his/her opinion, and try to work with him/her to get you in - its possible.

Oh and finish strong for fall.

don’t think it’s just a dark tunnel, i believe you will get in as a socio major. no offense but i am inferring that based on your username, you are a minority. Am I correct?

Yeah, the fact that they raised it to a 3.2 didn’t help me much lol. I really beat myself up over this In HS I took all the AP classes and had a high GPA. Now I’m over here at a CC struggling to get into Davis.

Well, I’m Indian (Asian Indian). I suppose that counts as “Asian” so I believe I’m the majority at Davis LMAO. :D

Thanks for your input UCkittychen

My uncle’s friend’s cousin’s stepfather had strep throat, and it made me get a B in History class. Promise.

Can I ask how your sister’s surgery caused your grades to drop?

LOL. Chain of events or what?

I had to shuttle my sister and my family between her appointments (pre and post op) to SF and back. I live in the outer east bay area so it isn’t that far, but it took it’s toll on my grades. I know it’s not a proper excuse, my dad was sick with a lung infection for two years, I have X-Rays to prove it. So he couldn’t drive, and my mom’s a night shift RN, so she couldn’t drive either. I don’t think I should write about all this on my personal statement, it seems like I’m pinning my poor academic performance on these problems. Oh and being 16 years old your first semester at CC is pretty overwhelming in it self lol.

c’mon hay you know its possible if a immediate family member had to go through surgery that would be a somewhat traumatic event, the stress factor would be substantially high.

The stress levels were through the roof! It wasn’t a serious surgery, but it was scary nonetheless.

I’ll try and bring my gpa to a 3.0 or above. I’ve heard just getting it to the 3.xx mark makes it look better and significantly increases your chances of getting into schools that have sub 3.0GPA minimum requirements.

what did you do over the summer, if only you had met that 3.2 mark.

you can still TAG to SC just to get yourself guaranteed somewhere.

I actually don’t believe you have that great of a chance at UCD at all. If it is truly the school you want to go to, consider a 3rd year at your CC. Please return here after you apply and let people know if you were admitted or not.

With this GPA, I don’t really stand a chance. I still have this semester to bring it up to a 3.0-3.26 though. A 3.2 is around the average GPA of admitted students. I’m confident that I’ll bring it up to a 3.0 at least.

What’s giving me hope is the tons of people who got in with sub 3.0 GPAs to non-competitive majors such as Pre-Managerial Econ, American Studies.

Thanks for your input though, I’ll let you know.

im not ruling out that it is not possible to be rejected because your GPA is low, but at the same time, with you having a high pre req GPA and socio being your major, gives me an idea it might be possible.

only time will tell though, so cliche.

Yep, I’ll just wait and see what happens. I don’t know if they take pre-req GPA into account though. Do they?

im in the same boat as you man. im applying to ucd as well into engineering. my gpa right now is 3.05 and my upper courses are at a 3.6. i hope to have an overall gpa of 3.2 by the end of fall. im sure with our high gpa in the upper courses that we have a strong shot. by the way can u guys look at my post and help me thanks.

I’m glad I’m not the only one in this boat lol. I hope they look at the pre-req GPA since both of our GPAs are high in that category. We still have this semester to work hard and bring our overall GPA up. I’m pretty sure a 3.2 is good enough to get admitted to UCD. If anyone else has any insight, please help. thanks.

Which classes do u need left as far as ur upper division?
