I’m currently in my second semester of community college but i plan on applying to some universities in the fall to admit as spring transfer. My first semester was a mess. I got a 1.69 gpa and two withdrawals. On my first semester i got a D and a F, but i plan on retaking those classes to boost my gpa. The problem is that those grades will still be on my transcripts. So how will that affect my chance of transfer to a good school.
@AvPsychologyGirl Define “a good school”. Some schools don’t even look at Ds and Fs as long as you retake those classes with a passing grade by the time of transfer. Do not worry about it too much. Retake the failed classes, file an AR (academic renewal - check if your CC offers this), and try to keep your GPA above 2.0 (some schools might require a minimum of 3.0).
I want to apply to a variety of schools such as uconn, boston university, emory, northwestern, pepperdine, umass, and i also want to apply to some schools that im pretty sure are out of my league (Brown, northeastern, cornell, brandeis, norte dame). My school has AR but it is only offered to students who have been out of school for 2 years. Instead they offer a chance to retake the course and the second grade replaces the first grade in the gpa.
edit: nevermind
Im sorry but with a gpa less than 2.0 or in reality anything less than 3.0 would make ir virtually impossible to transfer into a top 30 even harder for places like brown and cornell
You are at community college where you did poorly your 1st semester and now you are in the 2nd semester so you don’t have 2nd semester grades. Never-the-less you plan to transfer with the hopes of getting into some of the most competitive schools in the world. Since you call yourself psychology girl I assume that you are studying psychology which means you are not enrolled in the toughest courses that colleges offer. Do you see any problems with this scenario? Typically classes at community college are not as rigorous as classes at 4 year schools. But you have gotten a D and a F at the community college. So what do you think will happen if you were able to get yourself into one of the most competitive schools in the world? And, what makes you think you should be in one of those schools? Perhaps a better plan would be to stay in the community college and get your associates degree. Then apply to schools that have a good fit with your academic background.
Yes i have gotten a D and a F but it wasn’t entirely my fault. (I have a C, that was later turned into an incomplete. Since the professor never changed my final grade, it automatically went to F. For the D, i had issues with the professor) I got an A on one of my other classes - first semester. By the time spring transfer comes i’ll already have 54 credits. I do not want to stay another semester just for 6 credits especially since im not enjoying my time here. They don’t even offer a psychology major…
I understand my gpa is horrible but once i retake both of those classes, my gpa will raise alot. My issue is having the F and the D on the transcripts. My question is; will colleges be discouraged when they look at my first semester grades even if i have a great gpa?
This is what my first semester looked like… http://imgur.com/nAP5pH9 I will be getting my midterm grades in two weeks.
its on imgur . com
Wait up, how many credits do you have now with a 1.69 GPA? 54/3=18. Are you taking 18 hrs per semester? It’s only that low because of your first semester? And of course it isn’t your fault… heaven forbid you’d take any personal responsibility. It’s ALL the teacher’s fault.
I don’t mean to be harsh, but get real. Most of those schools you listed won’t accept you with you current GPA. That’s not to say any schools won’t, but you need to be realistic and plan your school list accordingly.
Yes im doing 18 credits. Last semester i did 18 credits as well but only ended up with 6 because i did pre- algrebra which is no credit, and i failed one of my classes so i also received no credit for that class. My first semester was a mess. And no, i’m not blaming my professors entirely. I wasn’t really focused on my work as much because i was in the hospital with issues and one of my professors did forget to give me a final grade causing me to have an automatic F. However, i know that those schools are competitive. That is why i’m asking if they will accept me with a D and a F on my transcript even if i retake those classes and receive an A?
Once i retake those classes, If i receive an A on both of my classes that i failed, my gpa will go from 1.69 to 4.0… So my overall gpa wont be horrible. I just dont like having those grades on my transcript.
You won’t be able to transfer yet - you’re in pre-algebra. Once you will have completed a college level math course, then you should apply. (I’m only really knowledgeable about the UC’s, but I don’t see any of the schools you mentioned allowing you to transfer without taking calc, statistics, or something recognized to be at the college level.
If you make a huge upward trend, then that could outweigh your bad grades, but they will still show.
Take another year. You also may want to cut down on the amount of units you’re taking - 18 is a lot, you may be overloading yourself.
Right now i’m in algebra 1. i will be taking statistics in the summer. Im not transferring now. I want to transfer in the fall so i can start spring 2017 semester in a univiersity.
Most colleges want to see college level mathematics which is about pre-calc level.
You are currently in algebra 1, you will need to take geometry and algebra 2 to show your quant abilities
statistics is college level math? My college doesn’t offer geometry
I have read a lot of threads on this website. This is by far the most delusional thread I ever read.
care to expand on that?
Others have explained their reasons. You want to transfer to good universities but yet your GPA is lower than 2.0 and you are lucky that you are not in academic probation in a community college. In addition to your GPA, your classes aren’t exactly the rigorous classes at your school. You be wasting your application fee money if you applied to these schools. Simple as that.
Although i do want to transfer to a good university, i am NOT planning to send in an application with 1.69 gpa. I think many of you are misunderstanding my original question. My question is; If i have a great GPA (such as 3.5+) will universities still consider my application even though i have a D and a F on my transcript? Its that simple of a question.
