Transferring With Horrible Grades from First CC & Great Grades at New CC?

So my beginning academics were absolutely atrocious. Just absolutely terrible. Nothing but W’s, a semester of F’s because I never dropped the classes in time, C’s and low B’s for what I didn’t end up dropping.

Simple put, I was in a bad mental space for the few years at the first CC I was going to.

I recently moved to get away from the issues I was facing and focus on my academics properly. Now, my grades are great. I’m currently looking at a 3.5 GPA for my first 14 credits, and have no doubt in my mind I’ll get it higher come the end of the upcoming Spring and Summer semester.

My question is, how does this affect my attempts for transferring?

I’m aiming for somewhat selective local Universities with average transfer GPA’s between 3.5 and 3.7. I wasn’t quite worried about qualifying as I work full time in a nice position for a company, go to school full time, and plan to be getting active in various clubs and EC’s this year. The only concern is my transcript from my previous school, I don’t know what to think or do to minimize it’s impact. I understand the night and day uptrend could be in my favor, but I’m just uncertain of the whole situation. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you.

You need to have a solid explanation for your improvement. Don’t make excuses, just state why you are doing so much better. I am pretty sure that most admission offices will take it into consideration.

It was nice to see someone else going through a similar situation. I have my own reasoning for my initial college experience, and will definitely highlight it on my transfer application. Good luck to you!! Keep pushing!!

I think you misunderstand, I have seen this in lots of students applying to my university from the point of view as a faculty member reading applications. I think that the most important grades are always the more recent ones. Sometimes an 18 year old is not really ready for college…
