Transferring with low-ish GPA...

So, I’m a freshman at NYU and I’m thinking I want to try and transfer out–I’m a lot happier here than I had expected to be, but of course now that I realize the social environment isn’t so bad, I’m also starting to find some of the academic options really limiting. So I want to transfer. I was planning on applying to a few of the Seven Sisters schools (4 of which I applied to as a senior), but I’m wondering if I should put it off for another year because I have a 3.1 GPA after my first semester. I know it’s not a bad GPA, and my classes were fairly challenging (WTE, a core math class, a pretty rigorous freshman seminar, and a Gender Studies elective). However, that’s still low for the schools I’m applying to.

I think I can definitely raise it next semester–I’m taking better classes and I’m a lot more adjusted to college life than I was. My essays should be good and I think I can count on at least one of my recommendations being pretty strong. There’s also the chance that they’ll weigh my high school record a little more heavily. So should I try and do applications this year, or is that going to be a waste of time?
