Hi, I'm currently attending at CCC and trying to transfer to UCD for Managerial Economics.

I just checked the updated Assist requirements for the major, and the classes listed there would most definitely take me more than 2 semesters to finish. Fall semester of 2012 I took 18 units, Spring of 2013 I took 14 units, and Summer of 2013 I took 7 units. A combined total of 39 units.

I still have seven more classes to go to complete the major requirements to transfer and a few more IGETC requirements. I've planned out my schedule for Fall 2013 semester as well as Spring 2014 semester.. but I still need 6 more units to complete everything after that..

Since UCD only accepts Fall transfers, does that mean I have to attend CCC for another year? If I take other courses along with those 6 units that I need to complete, I'll have over 90 units. I'm doing the TAG, and I was wondering would taking too many units or not being a full time student harm my chances for transfer?

You can take as many units as you want as long as it’s at a CCC only. You won’t be penalized for having too many. I tagged into man. econ with 84 units. Even though they require you to be a full-time student, you can TAG as a part-time student if you give a valid explanation. I was a part-time student. You don’t have to complete all the pre-reqs to transfer. I was missing 2 Calc classes and was approved. Talk to a counselor if you can…they’ll know a lot more.

Thanks emprex. I will talk this through with a counsellor. I think I will most likely spend another year to complete all the required courses if units aren’t a problem.

You don’t have to have the IGETC in order to be accepted, although Davis recommends it for students not applying to majors with a lot of required classes. The reason for completing the IGETC is that all UCs accept it as satisfying breadth requirements. If you enroll at Davis without having completed it then you must meet the Davis GE requirements before graduating. See [UC*Davis : Planning for a successful transfer](http://admissions.ucdavis.edu/admission/transfers/tr_planning.cfm)

So while I want to be upfront and tell you I’m not an expert, it does seem possible to shave a year off your college time. According to [UC Davis TAG - FAQ](TAG Frequently Asked Questions) you do not need to complete IGETC in order to qualify for TAG. So what I suggest you explore is this. (1) apply via TAG without those 6 extra units, but making sure you meet all the eligibility requirements for Davis admission. (2) In the summer take the extra 6 units to finish IGETC. (3) when you show up at Davis, whip out the IGETC certificate from your CC. You will be exempt from the Davis GE requirements and you saved spending an extra year at the CC.

If interested, I suggest you work with your counselor to see if you could do this.

One more thought. Not only may you be able to avoid an extra year at your CC, you may be able to avoid summer school that would be needed if you followed the plan in my previous post.

IGETC is designed for the needs of most CC students. They do not know where they will be accepted, and furthermore they might not even know which set of schools they will apply to until their 2nd year at the CC. This makes it difficult to pick a set of classes that will satisfy the lower division general-ed requirements no matter where they end up. This is why IGETC exists; it promises that no matter where they end up enrolled, if they have completed IGETC the school will agree they have satisfied the general-ed requirements.

This does not apply to you. If you are pretty certain you will satisfy every condition of the TAG requirement (GPA, courses taken, etc) then you will be going to Davis. In that case, the only general-ed requirements that matter are those at Davis. Using ASSIST and the Davis web site you may be able to come up with a set of courses this 2nd year that satisfies all the Davis general-ed requirements as well as making you eligible for your major. If so you would not need to complete the IGETC.
