I'm thinking of transferring next year from ECU to UNC Wilmington for it's creative writing program. The only problem is this: I had a really rough first fall semester as a freshman and due to many upsets was unable to do as well as I'd have liked to. I failed two classes and got a D in the third. The very next semester I used my three grade replacements and retook the courses and ended up with two A's and a B respectively. The new grades replaced the poor ones and are weighed into my GPA, so now my GPA is 3.45 at this point and everything has been fine ever since. My concern is that the original grades (while not factored in) are also put onto my transcripts alongside my improved grades. Does having these old reminders on my transcripts hurt my chances? Does it factor into my acceptance? Or are they only concerned with the new grade and GPA? And even beyond that, will it hurt my chances of applying for programs and grad school later on?

bump (would still like an answer)

Once you transfer and send in your transcripts to the Uni’s you want to attend they will either, depending on their policy, will not include those grades that you did not pass and just use the replacement grades. Buuut some Universities will include ALL attempts when recalcuating your GPA. So check on that before you apply so you can figure out what GPA the admissions people will be looking at. The one w/ grade forgivness or the one w/ all attempts included.
About graduate school they will look at every single grade you recieved upon entering college. They will look at every single withdraw and repeat you have had, they don’t mess around. But it doesn’t mean you don’t have a chance they just need to know how you will be able to handle graduate school as it is a whole different beast compared to undergrad.
You only had 3 bad grades, so I wouldn’t worry too much as long as you keep getting excellent grades every term and keep bringing up that GPA don’t worry yourself too much.
