Hello, and thanks in advance for anyones time in reading/responding, anyways ...

I am currently a student at Boston University and I was recently suspended for a full year for disciplinary reasons. I got arrested in September with some pretty serious charges related to drinking and posession of weed. I'm really not a bad kid, just being stupid and wrong place wrong time... I thought everything was ok with BU and I had already applied to transfer to other schools before I got a letter from BU in March that said I was being given a deferred suspension that starts after finals. I sent an appeal and have heard nothing since. I already finished applications to 2 of the 4 schools i'm applying to before i was suspended, and I was wondering what I should do. I don't remember if they asked if I have ever been suspended or not. Also I was not given a guilty verdict so I was told by my attorney I can honestly answer that i have never been convicted on the applications.

For the 2 applications I haven't finished yet I am probably going to be honest and let them know I was suspended, but what should I do about the other 2 schools. The 2 schools I already sent the applications to are good state schools but not overly prestigious ... UGA and GA state. My friends dad, who used to work at a college, suggested that I only let them know if I get accepted and choose to go there.

As far as the other 2 schools I'm applying to, Emory and GA tech, I already don't have to good of a chance even if I didn't mention my suspension, especially Emory. The only thing thats on my side for GT is the fact that I grew up in GA and am still "technically a GA resident".

I recently had an official transcript sent to my apartment to see what it would say, and there was no mention of the suspension ... at least not yet.

My GPA is only a 2.9 ... already not that great since I had some real trouble in engineering my first semester freshman year before i transfered to business school. Counting only business classes its a 3.1 which is pretty hard cause BU has some pretty intense deflation (or lack of inflation ...).

Should I not even bother applying at all? How should I go about letting the schools know? What is the chance of the schools finding out (ethical and moral aspects of lying aside)? What would happen if I lied? If I told the truth?

Any advice people?

Thank you very much

Don't tell anyone anything yet about the actual arrest. Like your lawyer said, you haven't been convicted.

Find out (from your registrar) if your transcript makes notation of your suspension. If it does, you will have to explain it on your app. If it doesn't, don't say anything.

Once (and if) accepted, call up the school in question and explain the suspension if you haven't already explain it in the app.

What part of Atlanta are you from?

If school you are applying to ask you to get dean or advisor's recommendation, your dean or advisor will ask college disciplinary office (such as university police) to find out any disciplinary act in the past.

Other then that.. you are fine

huh, I've wondered about this too. I was suspended for basically the same reason at a terrible PA University and have enrolled at my community college. I called two colleges (Pitt and Reed) asking about how this could affect my chances and basically both said "We will take note of this but it was a non-academic suspension and if there is a turn around or signs of a truly inspired student we can look past it".
I also spoke with my previous school and they told me I would be on good standing after my suspension was over, whether I return or not.

I'm not sure about only telling them after acceptance though because most apps will ask if you have been suspended, removed, or expelled from any previous college/university.

post back if you find anything out beyond that because I'd like to know how to go about this thing for next year. thanks.

thanks for the responses ya'll. none of the schools have asked for a deans recommendation. Emory asked for any recommendation from faculty and I got it from one of my professors from Freshman year. One of my freinds knows the Dean of arts and sciences at UGA so I am hoping his connection will help me out as I might have a chance to actually talk to the dean of arts and sciences in person and explain the situation. I've also chosen not to "officially withdraw" from BU because if worse comes to worse and no schools let me in, I need to be able to come back to BU to finish school. In my letter of appeal I stated that I intend to transfer (god knows if they even bothered reading it, its been nearly 6 weeks). Was this a bad idea? Also even though I didn't get convicted, I was given a verdict of "continuance without a finding" which is essentially a nolo type verdict, I was given a year probation, but this week the judge ended my probation early because I am moving back to Atlanta and it wasn't worth the courts hassle to move my probation to Atlanta. My attorney said the charges would appear as "dismissed" on a state rap sheet. How should I phrase my letter to Emory about my arrest and "run in" with the police without making it obvious I got arrested?!? Sounds like a catch-22. I feel I am playing it ok with Ga state, UGA and GT by telling them after acceptance, but Emory is private and I have a gut feeling I need to let them know right on the app, (by the way correction, I did turn in my GT app, so Emory is the only one I didnt turn in yet). I am going to order a transcript from BU once my grades from Spring 07' show up and see what it says. Thanks again and anymore advice is appreciated.

so essentially your appeal was centered around the reason that you dislike BU and want to transfer to somewhere better? That may not have been the best explanation, imo!

Well, not exactly. It empahasized very politely that taking a year off of school is not in my best interest and that although I appreciated everything BU's done for me, that I decided to go somewhere else. I wish I could find the original document I wrote to send it to you but I can't find it... Either way I don't think anybody actually read it.
