Transferring Within UCs?

Hi, I’ll be a freshman at UCSD next year.

I heard it’s very difficult to transfer from one UC to another but couldn’t let myself give up the experience of being a college freshman (meaning I didn’t want to be a sore loser and just resort to a community college for a year due to disappointment and transfer…which is possible in the honors program and with my high school grades)

But truthfully, I know I have yet to determine my happiness at UCSD…but I really see myself being happiest at Berkeley or maybe even UCLA…not because of their obviously stellar reputations, but because of their location and atmosphere…especially Berkeley.

Can anyone give me any advice in terms of transferring? Is it possible to do it after one quarter? A year? Does it have to be 2 years?

What do they take into account? (High school grades? SAT? Quarter grades? EC’s?)

My SATs are pretty low so I hope transferring will be a means to circumvent that whole process…

I’m also looking into transferring to McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Thanks

Ok, i just did this. I am going ot transfer from UCI to UCSD.

I did a full year at UCI, and realized it was not the school for me. I withdrew from the university, b/c I've read that they give priority to JC students, and even on the UC app, they ask which was your last school you were coming from. As for whether or not it actually works as a minor loophole, it's anyones guess.

I did one semester at my local JC, ran out of engineering classes to take, and also did poorly in my physics class, as i stacked on too much of a course load, wnating to fulfil the transfer requirement in one year. So for winter 05, I went back to UCI, I still submitted my apps, and had to report my classes being at UCI and not hte JC anymore.

I applied to UCB, UCD, UCSD, and UCLA. Only UCSD accepted me. I'm not sure if i count as a full on UC->UC transfer success story as I spent one semester at JC.

I got admitted as an Undeclared and not an engineering major, b/c i didn't fulfil the transfer requirement, thus i have to take one more physics class at ucsd, and then i get prioity filing into the engineering school.

This last part makes me think that it's possible to transfer without already finishing all your transfer units. However, I have over 100 quarter units, the claimed requirement is 90, and altho I didn't complete the transfer required courses, I did however complete a number of major required courses durring my first 2 years.

As for your questions regaurding HS grades and SAT scores. Everything I read says that they put their main focus on how you did while in college. As you prolly know, some kids don't take to college well,a nd altho being highly successful in hs, once out of their parents house, they go wild and flunk out. If you get a 3.5+ college gpa, it'd be hard for UCLA or UCB to say no to you. I forget if they even ask you what SAT's are, i think the answer is yes, but it's no longer their main focus. THey do not ask for your hs grades, or gpa if i recall correctly.

I would recomend against going ot JC and transfering from there. I know a lot of academically motivated students (like yourself) who took 3 years to finish up in JC. It's not that you're taking your time, it;s just that it takes that long to get a transfer agreement.

iam going to try to transfer to ucb after one year at cal if i don't take my gt at cornell because of the climate

Does anyone one know if UCB accepts units from AP scores as transfer units? I'm an incoming freshman to UCI and I'll have 48 units by the end of my first year; my AP units will bring me up to 60 units.

The answer to your question is: yes, ucla and ucb do accept ap scores as transfer units. However, I believe you need 60 semester units, which is 90 quarter units.

it's impossible, give up now.

Very possible. Maintain as high a gpa as possible and rock the personal statements.
