So, I go to a private university on Long Island that’s pretty small and close to home. My parents and I thought it would be ideal for me because I do have Cerebral Palsy and am able to navigate the 75-acre campus without any assistance. Also, I have a decent scholarship. The only problem is that I’ve never liked it. It’s primarily a commuter school and I live on campus, only to go home every weekend because there is nothing here for me. I’m a second-semester sophomore now and I’m tired of the place. My closest friend transferred after freshman year, one of my former roommates transferred last semester, and one my current roommates is applying to other schools right now. The academics are fine, I guess, but there’s nothing I would particularly miss. There’s a very prevalent vibe that everyone who goes to school here does not want to be here, and it’s depressing after awhile.
That all being said, I’m fairly certain I want to transfer. My parents are against the idea because they think this school is the perfect fit for me, and I won’t have the conveniences that I do anywhere else. They may be correct. But, I’m miserable and think I’m in need of a change. I should also mention my parents are of the helicopter variety and I think getting away would be a positive experience for all of us. I have Florida Pre-Paid and have been looking into the state schools. The weather is a plus, as it is less than ideal to trudge through the snow and rain on crutches. My father also lives there, and I’d like to get back in touch with him. I don’t get to see him very often.
Of course, I also have to acknowledge that these schools are much larger than the one I am currently at and would take some getting used to. I also do not want to delay my graduation any further than I might be (I plan on changing my major). As of now, my GenEds are complete and I have 65 credits under my belt from dual enrollment courses, etc. So, if you’ve actually read this massive rant, I guess my question would be, is transferring worth it?
good luck!
