Transferring

Okay, so I'm a senior this year and I've auditioned for various schools and put a deposit down on a BFA program. However, I do not really want to go to this school. I just don't feel ready for college and I'm not completely happy with my choice of school. My debt is going to be around $80,000 when I graduate. I was thinking about withdrawing my enrollment and just going to my local CC for a year. I would want to use this year to get more acting experience and I just signed with a local agency in my hometown. However, after my first year at CC, I'd want to transfer. I would prefer to go to California and apply to schools there. I would really love to be able to double major with perhaps a BA in Theatre and a Marketing or Communications degree. Are there schools on the West coast that allow a transfer student to enter as a Theatre major after their first year; I don't want to have to start over as a freshman since I'd be going to a CC to save money. This year, throughout auditions, I've realized what I want in a college and my original list didn't reflect that, so this time I'm more well prepared. I don't think the BFA route is right for me anymore and I'd rather go for a BA. I'm a good student, in all APs and Honor classes, NHS member, etc. I have a lot of extra curriculars surrounding theatre and volunteer work. Does any one have any advice on transferring or if this sounds like a good idea?

Whatever you do…don’t go to the school and spend money if you aren’t 100% committed. Almost all BA programs have you enter at a level where your credit hours place you. This will depend on the number of hours you take at CC and how they are accepted at a university. One thing to consider is going to CC in California if you can afford it and it works with your agency if that’s ultimately where you want to be. LOTS of kids go to Santa Monica CC who ultimately transfer to UCLA.

I think your plan is a very good one.

Do NOT go to a school isn’t right for you. Instead, it makes much more sense as you say to keep looking, while in the meantime getting acting experience and taking some classes at a Community College.

It’s a great plan, and it’s your life, so you know better than anyone what you want to do with it.

KEVP

With a BA in Theatre, the vast majority of schools will make it easy and possible to double major. 80k is a lot of debt, and unless you are sure, you are making the right choice. But do the school a favor, and let them know as soon as you are certain. It changes the dynamic of the incoming class.

Good luck. But it sounds to me like you are good to go, so I’m not sure you need it.
