Lately I've been hearing about many people who are transferring out of Ithaca and several who hate the college. Am I just hearing all the bad stuff about Ithaca and are there really a lot of people who don't like it there? Ithaca is one of my top choices but it makes me a little unsure when I hear about all the people who dislike it there. Who knows maybe these people would hate it just as much at other colleges too. Just wondering what current students think of Ithaca overall and their experiences there. Thanks

Heres what i have to say about IC (and I transferred out...)

The people are amazing. There aren't many snobby or pretentious people even though a good majority of the kids are very affluent (trust me I saw plenty of BMWs in the freshman parking lot...). Everyone drinks. And basically everyone smokes weed. The townies are awesome and extremely liberal.

The shopping kind of sucks. The commons is interesting since it has basically just a bunch of local shops and the clothes are eccentric but you can't do any REAL shopping there. Oh and the commons is to IC as collegetown is to Cornell. Just letting you know.

The weather is horrendous. I grew up in hot and humid weather year round so I wasn't prepared for the majority of my freshman year to be like freaking -10 degrees at night and all the salt stains on my pants haha. Since I wasnt used to the weather I got depressed from how dreary and bleak it was for a good majority of the time.

The campus...is nice. The dorms are all pretty nice with the exception of the towers. Gross. The buildings are all close and there's even a pond on campus to enjoy. When the weather permitted, my friends and I loved to lay out in the grass. Towers houses basically all freshman so it's rowdy but I would reccomend living in either the upper quads (very close to library which is a plus in cold weather) or terraces. You have to remember everything is on a hill though so keep that in mind.

So yeah, I met a lot of great people. Took really interesting classes with great professors (I reccomend Beachler if youre into politics), but the school just wasn't for me. Oh and it's hard to find easy transportation there. The local airport sucks if you want to fly you have to fly into syracuse. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the relpy! And i live in Syracuse now so transportation wouldn't be an issue and trust me im used to the cold weather haha. but yeah mainly i just wanted to get an idea of why so many people decide to transfer out of ithaca. Any other reasons why you decided to leave? youre comments or anything else about the college would be greatt! :) thanks

A lot of people leave Ithaca for financial reasons. It's not a cheap school.

My main reason for leaving was lack of rigor in academics. I found it to be much less challenging than I had anticipated. That said, I have amazing friends there that are incredibly hard to leave, and I definitely look forward to visiting them. Also, the lack of interest in Ithaca (the town) was major for me. For some people, it is incredibly lively and a fun place to be, but it was just not a particularly good place for me.
