Transferring...

I am not a great student.
I will have some nice SAT scores, amazing EC activities and tons of leadership, as well as load of volunteer work.
My grades, however, SUCK. I am barely pulling a 2.6 and am 36th in my class of 190 (I take lots of honors and AP classes, ha).
If I go to a less-prestigious college, like Adelphi, or New York Institute of Technology, or University of Maine Orono, and do very well, will a better college want me? (Looking at Syracuse, Ithaca...)
I mean, I'm applying to Syracuse and Ithaca regular decision, but if they don't accept me, do I get a second shot after a semester at one of those colleges?

I don't know specifically if you get a shot at Syracuse, Ithaca, etc..., but most colleges require their transfer students to complete at least a year of college or ~25-30 hours of college credit. Even after a year of college, colleges are still going to look at your high school grades, ECs, etc...but less of an emphasis will be put on them, and more will be put on your college work/grades. The more classes you take, the less and less colleges will care how you did in high school. If I were you, I'd take 2 or 3 classes over the summer at a community college so that you have more college grades.

Good Luck

Kayleealia - I'm planning on doing something similar. I also got into UMO and NYIT but I REALLY wanted to go to NEU (who rejected me) and I want to transfer after a year. I hear that it's a LOT easier to transfer to a school than just apply. good luck to us both!
