Transferring

Hello,

I have finished first year of psychology in Slovenia and I decided, that I would rather study medicine. As I decided to study medicine a bit to late to enroll in an USA pre-med program, I will finish my first year here and then try to transfer.

Is that even possible and if it is - will a program in USA consider any of the subjects from Slovenian university of medicine?

Do I have to pass any language tests?

Can I by any chance get a schoolarship to study in USA, eventought I start in 2nd year?

When do I have to apply for transfer?

Is there anything I have to give special attention to, when choosing pre-med program?

Which programs do you recommend?

Thank you for your help

this thread may be helpful to you. The guy had similar problems. But in most cases international students majoring in pre-med/pre-law have to pay in full. Besides, Law School and Medical school hardly admit international students who seek FA. so you should consider, what will you do after getting a pre-med degree in US college? Going to Medical school in US? That’s much much too exorbitant for middle-class families, and you can’t get loans from US government, can hardly get FA. Getting back to hometown for graduate school? so why the fuss getting a us pre-med degree? Be a doctor? you can’t be a doctor with only a pre-med degree!

so I think if you are not a US citizen& not from a well-to-do family, you’d better revolve this idea of transferring to American universities to study pre-med.

About tests: Yes, definitely. TOEFL, SAT 1, SAT 2.

Thank you :).

I would finish my studies in USA, if I went there.

Just one more question…if I finish medicine in Slovenia (and get ECFMG Certificate), can I apply for internship and residency in USA?

residency has nothing to do with qualifications. there’s just the lottery and visa sponsorship (no idea how that works for med students)

I think you could. Although my impression is that most companies prefer domestic students to foreigners, since that means less trouble…But, one never knows! That ECFMG Certificate may help some, I suppose. :)

Yes, it is possible. You could transfer to the US, and major in something like nursing, pre-med, chemistry, biology.

A lot of international students who want to be doctors come to the USA and get a nursing degree. I have many friends who are doing this, they believe that after they get their degree, they could work as nurses and save money for med school.

Yes, u prob have to write the TOEFL Test, which is required for students whose first language isn’t English.

You can get a scholarship. Do you have good grades in school right now? You could also write the SATs and get a scholarship with it. It also depends on where you go to school, the scholarship packages offered by universities differs a lot.
