I was previously accepted to UVA as an OOS student, but ended up declining for the cheaper in state school. How does being previously accepted (as a first time student) affect chances at being accepted as a transfer if your transcript,etc... is still fairly similar?

Hmm gives hope :). Also, I don’t think previously being accepted does anything to your chances. I know someone that got accepted to a college but took a gap year. Then the next year they applied again thinking they were in but the school told the OP that applicants were more competitive. Now the OP is collegeless after 2 years :(.

This might be a different story at UVA but I’m just going off of what I’ve seen.

From my experience, it doesn’t matter in the sense that they say “oh hey got in before, the decision is now ___”. However, it can affect you indirectly. First, obviously your high school stats are on the upper end (as long as you didn’t bomb second semester). If you’re applying to enter your second year, that will help quite a bit since they look at your high school scores. Secondly, you can use this to help explain why you’d like to attend. Obviously you thought you might want to go there, and it sounds like you would have if you could have afforded it. UVa might look kindly upon someone who openly admits they wanted to attend but decided to be mature and be fiscally responsible. This, and with solid academic reasons behind your want to transfer, might set you apart from other applicants who are applying because they “love UVa and have always wanted to attend!”.

Just my two cents. I’m a firm believer that to succeed anywhere in the world now, whether it be applying to college or standing out on the job, you have to set yourself apart from the other masses of equally brilliant people, and demonstrate everyone wins by you attending. I can’t give you a solid answer, but I can attest that if you want to succeed as a transfer, both in the application process and in your years at UVa, you have to really want to attend. I saw a few transfers bomb out because they just wanted to attend, not because they truly thought they could fit in well. Transferring is mentally and emotionally draining at some times, but it sounds like you already have your head squarely on your shoulders Good luck

I had around a 4.80 on our North Carolina scale. I finished 2nd in the class. If you guys have more questions feel free to send me a private message.
